Tested from the Start: Half of ECAC Hockey is in the DCU/USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings, with #3/3 Yale, #4/4 Quinnipiac, #6/6 Colgate, #10/10 Cornell, #11/11 Clarkson and #15/T14 Princeton. Six of Princeton's 10 games so far have been against top-10 teams, and of the ranked ECACH teams, Princeton has faced all but Quinnipiac already this season. Princeton has six more regular-season games against currently ranked teams, next on Jan. 13 at Cornell.
The Series with Rensselaer and Union: Princeton leads the all-time series with RPI 18-9-5, has won the last five overall and the last three at RPI. RPI's last win was in 2019 in Princeton and last home win was in 2018. Princeton leads the series with Union 34-1-1 and has won 14 straight since Union's lone win, at home in 2014. Princeton has won seven straight at Union.
Stat Rankings: Entering the week, Princeton stood No. 7 in the nation in faceoff percentage, winning at the draw 55.2 percent of the time for the team's top stat ranking. Individually, junior Sarah Fillier ranked 15th in faceoff wins, at 158, and sophomore netminder Jennifer Olnowich ranked 16th with two shutouts. Other top-20 rankings were Olnowich's 19th-best GAA at 2.047 and rookie Emerson O'Leary's 19th-best two game-winning goals.
Outshoot 'em: Princeton has outshot its opponent overall in eight of 10 games on the season, with the loss at Yale and the tie against Cornell in Nashville as the lone exceptions. On the season, Princeton is averaging 32.0 shots a game to 26.6 for its opponent.
Tournament Success: Princeton made it to the ECAC semifinals for the third consecutive competitive season last winter, making some history in the process. Princeton became the first eighth seed to win a three-game series from the top-seeded team in the quarterfinals since the best-of-three quarterfinal format began in 2002. Princeton made the ECAC semis in 2019 and won it for the first time in 2020.
Between the Pipes: Sophomore Jennifer Olnowich has played about 68 percent of the minutes in goal this season with rookie Taylor Hyland playing the other 32 percent. Hyland has the lower GAA, at 1.87 to 2.05 for Olnowich, and Hyland has the edge in save percentage, .940 to .915.
New Scorers: Princeton has seen three players score their first career goals this season in rookies Emerson O'Leary, Issy Wunder and Katherine Khramtsov. Senior Maggie Connors and junior Sarah Fillier, 110 career goals between them, have added four more, and sophomore Dominique Cormier has netted her fourth career goal.
Nice Addition: Back for her junior season is Sarah Fillier, who last played for Princeton in the 2019-20 season that ended due to the pandemic just before the NCAA tournament. In the meantime, Fillier helped Canada to two IIHF World Championships and Olympic gold. Fillier has 74 career assists, more than halfway to the program record of 122 (Katherine Issel '95, only Princeton player with 100 career assists), and 122 career points, more than halfway to the program record of 218 (Issel, one of three players with 200 career points).
