Princeton Falls To Lafayette In Overtime
September 25, 2022 | Field Hockey
The last thing the Princeton field hockey team wanted to see in the finale of its stretch of five games in 10 days was another overtime. Unfortunately for the Tigers, that's where they found themselves Sunday afternoon, going to OT for the third time in eight days.
Hannah Findlay tied the game with 2:32 to play and Felicitas Hannes won it 5:38 into overtime to lead Lafayette to a stunning 3-2 win over Princeton on Bedford Field.
Princeton led 2-1 after Sam Davidson converted a penalty stroke with 2:47 left, but McAndrew chased down the ball just before it reached the end line and drew a corner immediately on the restart, which she then finished to tie it just 15 seconds after the Tigers took the lead. The game-winner came on some great passing in the circle, as McAndrew one-timed an entry pass to the open Hannes on the backside for the tap-in.
Princeton now has five days off until its next game, and the Tigers might not know what to do with themselves with all that time. This most recent five-game run saw Princeton have two full days off between games only once and play three of those five games on one day's rest, including the one against Lafayette. The stretch included a 4-3 overtime win over No. 3 Maryland and a 2-1 OT loss to Northwestern, as well as a 3-1 win over Delaware to start it and a 2-1 win over Penn Friday in the Ivy opener.
Zoe Shephard scored her first of the season to give Princeton a 1-0 lead with 45 seconds left in the first quarter, but the Leopards tied it midway through the third on a Sydney Woolston goal. Despite outshooting Lafayette 21-9 for the day, Princeton had only the stroke from Davidson after Beth Yeager drew the foul to show for it.
The Tigers will be back to their Ivy League schedule Friday in New Haven to take on Yale, with a trip to UConn Sunday and then Monmouth a week from Wednesday in the final non-league game of the regular season.
