After playing five home games in 10 days, the Princeton field hockey team will now take to the road. This time, it's a three-games, six days run that will see the Tigers play their second Ivy League game, another game against a top 10 team and then a rematch with a team that handed Princeton a tough loss a year ago.
Princeton begins this stretch at Yale in the 53rd meeting between the teams. Princeton has played Yale more than it has any other opponent.
Princeton vs. Yale
Five storylines
On the road
Princeton has played nine games, of which six have been at home, including five straight and six of the last seven. The Tigers have played three away games, including two at North Carolina to start the season (against the Tar Heels and Louisville) and then a game Sept. 11 at Rutgers, in the first 29 days of the season. They will now play three more in six days.
After taking on Yale in New Haven Friday, Princeton will be at UConn (ranked eighth in the RPI) Sunday. The stretch concludes Wednesday at Monmouth, who defeated Princeton 3-2 in overtime last October.
Princeton defeated Yale 3-1 last year in Princeton, getting two goals from Sammy Popper and one from Grace Schulze in the win. Princeton outshot Yale 19-6, but Yale goalie Luanna Summer kept her team in the game with 13 saves. Summer has played every minute in goal for Yale this season.
Princeton then defeated UConn 2-1 two days later as Beth Yeager scored both goals, including one seven minutes into overtime.
In goal
Robyn Thompson has played every minute in goal for Princeton this season. After starting the year with five saves and six goals against in the losses to UNC and Louisville, Thompson had a career .608 save percentage, a career-high of seven saves and a career average of 3.0 saves per game.
In the seven games since, Thompson has bettered her old career high five times, with four eight-save games and one nine-save game. Her save percentage in those seven games is .806, and she's averaged 7.14 saves per game.
Strength of schedule
Princeton has four losses (all by one goal, two in overtime), three of which have come to the teams currently ranked 1 (North Carolina), 2 (Northwestern) and 4 (Louisville) in the RPI.
Princeton also has a win over No. 6 Maryland and a win over No. 18 Syracuse. The Tigers have two games remaining against RPI Top 20 teams: Sunday at No. 8 UConn and Oct. 23 at home against No. 14 Harvard.
Princeton is currently ranked 13th in the RPI.
Goal oriented
Princeton and Brown are the only two Ivy League teams that have not been shut out so far this year. Princeton is the only team in the league who has yet to play a game in which one of the teams was shut out.
The last time Princeton was shut out in an Ivy League game was back in 1993, when the Tigers lost 1-0 at Brown in a game played on the old rooftop field.
