Women's Soccer to Visit Bucknell Tuesday: Five Things to Know
September 26, 2022 | Women's Soccer
Two non-league games remain this season for the Princeton women's soccer team, both against Patriot League programs. The first of those will come Tuesday night at Bucknell.
at Bucknell (5-4-1), Tuesday, 7 p.m. | ESPN+ | Live StatsÂ
1. Settling in: Of the 11 goals Princeton has allowed this season, nine have come in the first half, and all nine of those in the first 26 minutes. Five of the 11 goals have come in the first 10 minutes, and the Tigers' opponents prevailed in three of the four games when getting a goal in the first 10 minutes (Rutgers, Hofstra, Yale; Princeton rallied to defeat Colgate).Â
2. Shots: Princeton has outshot overall eight of its nine opponents this season, all except Rutgers. The Tigers have outshot seven of the nine on goal, with one of the other two games finishing even in shots on goal (Hofstra). Princeton has outshot opponents 163-72 overall on the season and 66-33 on goal.
3. Series history: Princeton and Bucknell first met in 1995, and the Tigers have a 9-1-1 series lead. The teams played annually from 1995-99, with Princeton winning all five, before Bucknell won the series resumption in 2007 and Princeton won in 2008. The teams tied the next meeting, in 2016, and Princeton has won the last three, in 2017, 2018 and 2021. Two of the goal scorers for Princeton return from last season's 6-1 Tiger win at Sherrerd Field, in Lily Bryant and Lexi Hiltunen. Abby Gearhart had the goal for Bucknell and is back. Ella Gantman and Tyler McCamey, both back, split time in goal for Princeton, and Jenna Hall played the full game in goal for Bucknell and is also back. Bryant is one of seven Tigers to score a goal this season, headed by Pietra Tordin and Heather MacNab with four apiece.
4. Forecasting the Bison: Bucknell players earned Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player and Midfielder of the Year, with Rylee Donaldson as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Teresa Deda as the Preseason Midfielder of the Year. Donaldson leads the team in points, with eight on three goals and two assists, and Deda has a team-high five assists. Bucknell was picked second in the league's preseason poll, earning 144 poll points to stand just one point back of first-place pick Navy (145).
5. Against the Patriot League: Princeton has won the last nine in a row against Patriot League opponents since tying Bucknell in 2016, outscoring the opponents 28-4 in those nine wins, and is unbeaten in 23 straight since a 2010 loss at American. That 23-game run includes games against seven Patriot League opponents in Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Lafayette, Lehigh and Loyola.
