Impressive Finish for Women’s Cross Country at Paul Short Run
September 30, 2022 | Women's Cross Country
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - On Friday morning, the Princeton University women's cross-country team competed in the 48th annual Paul Short Run at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The Tigers had participants in both the Women's College Gold 6k race and the unscored Open Women's 6k. Princeton was one of 46 teams entered to race among several nationally-ranked institutions, and a total of 416 participants ran in the Women's Gold 6k.
Thanks to the team's impressive efforts among a challenge of fierce competitors, Princeton rose to the occasion finishing ninth as a team for the race. Princeton finished besides some top talent, with #12 UNC claiming first place, #18 Georgetown coming in second, and #16 Utah Valley finishing fifth.
Junior, Abby Loveys was the top Tiger of the day finishing within the top-20 runners at eighth-place with a time of 19:58.2. Loveys finished the race with grit, moving up 11 spots over the last 2800m to finish under 20:00. Other top finishers of the race included junior Page Lester who came in 39th (20.17.2), sophomore Fiona Max at 56th (20.29.6), sophomore Lexi Allen in 87th (20.44.0), and sophomore India Weir in 103rd (20:53.4).
Out of the five tigers who competed in the Open women's 6k, three finished within the top-20, out of 307. Freshman Peyton Leigh was 10th (21:52.7) , sophomore Isabel Max was 15th (21:55.6), and freshman Stella Vieth was 18th (22:00.2)
Junior Maggie Hock finished 21st (22:04.3) and junior Gillian Wagner came in 60th (22:54.4)
"We had some outstanding individual performances today", said head coach Brad Hunt. "Abby Loveys raced lights out in a wildly competitive field. Her time of 19:58 is one of the fastest marks on this course in program history. Our young crew in the open race demonstrated massive improvement from our last competition. Peyton Leigh, Isabel Max and Stella Vieth all competed from the front in their first collegiate 6000m race. As a team, we fell short of our goal of finishing top-five while mixing it up with several top-20 nationally ranked teams. We have work to do over the next four weeks in order to be in the mix for the Ivy League Team title. We will use today as fuel for training and racing throughout the month of October."
