Three Tigers Net Hat Tricks in Win over No. 4 Quinnipiac
January 29, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Scoring the most goals for a Princeton women's hockey team in the lifetimes of any of the current Tigers, Sunday afternoon's game at Baker Rink saw Princeton knock off No. 4-ranked Quinnipiac 11-3 in a game that included three Princeton hat tricks.
Senior Maggie Connors had her fourth career hat trick in the win, junior Sarah Fillier had her second, and rookie Jane Kuehl, in the same game that saw her score her first career goal, was the third Tiger hat trick, scoring the game's final goal.
Connors opened the scoring with a goal with just less than three minutes gone in the game, and after Quinnipiac's Sadie Peart provided the equalizer only 22 seconds later, Princeton grabbed the lead right back with a Kayla Fillier goal only 16 seconds after Quinnipiac tied it.
The Kayla Fillier goal began a run of four straight goals for Princeton over a span of 7:16 that saw Connors, Dominique Cormier and Jane Kuehl score to give Princeton a 5-1 lead, and the Tigers led the rest of the way.
Quinnipiac's Maya Labad scored with 1:05 to go in the first period to pull the Bobcats back within 5-2, but Princeton had the next five goals to open up an eight-goal lead. During that stretch, Jane Kuehl and Sarah Fillier scored in the second period to make it 7-2 Princeton at the last ice cut, and Sarah Fillier's second and third goals bookended a Connors goal as Princeton's two leading active point scorers locked in their hat tricks.
Olivia Mobley had the last Quinnipiac goal with less than four minutes to go, and Jane Kuehl made it the third Tiger hat trick with less than two minutes to go in the game.
Twelve Tigers scored points in the game, with Connors scoring five points, Sarah Fillier and Jane Kuehl getting four and Annie Kuehl scoring three. Annie Kuehl had the assist on sister Jane Kuehl's first career goal, and the Kuehl sisters each assisted on Kayla Fillier's goal.
Princeton's scoring output was its most since an 11-1 win over St. Lawrence on Jan. 5, 1997. The 11 goals tied the most allowed by Quinnipiac in program history, since the Bobcats began play in 2000; Mercyhurst scored 11 against Quinnipiac on Oct. 16, 2004.
At No. 4, Quinnipiac was the highest-ranked opponent Princeton defeated since knocking off No. 1 Cornell in the 2020 ECAC Hockey tournament final, and it came in Princeton's 11th game, out of 22 overall, against a national top-10 opponent.
Princeton will continue ECAC Hockey play next weekend with a trip to Harvard Friday and Dartmouth Saturday.
