Tigers Score Early, Beat Harvard
February 03, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
It wasn't quite the 11 goals that the Princeton women's hockey team scored last Sunday against Quinnipiac, but the momentum seemed to roll right into Friday's first period in what became a 3-2 win at Harvard.
Maggie Connors, who had a hat trick last Sunday, scored just seven seconds into the game. Sarah Fillier, who also had a hat trick last weekend, added another goal in the period, and rookie Katherine Khramtsov had the third as Princeton led the rest of the way.
Princeton outshot Harvard 67-28 overall and 38-14 on goal with rookie Taylor Hyland making 12 saves to get the win in goal.
Sarah Fillier won the opening faceoff at center ice, sent the puck to the boards for Mariah Keopple, and Keopple sent it forward for Connors, who did the rest after beating a pair of Harvard skaters into the Tigers' attacking zone.
The goal was the senior Connors' 73rd of her career, most among active Tigers and 12th-most in program history and three away from joining the top 10.
After the program's active career goals leader scored, it was the program's active career points leader's turn, with Sarah Fillier adding the goal to the earlier assist and lifting her to 144 career points, 11th in program history and three out of 10th. Fillier's assist on Connors' goal was the 85th of her career, good for sixth in program history and one out of fifth.
Connors had a point on the Fillier goal as well, with Fillier freeing the puck from a scrum in one corner and sending it around to the other side for Connors to reunite Fillier with the puck in the slot, where Fillier provided the finish.
Princeton took a 3-0 lead when Khramtsov swiped the puck from a Harvard skater at center ice and gave herself a breakaway chance, maneuvering around Harvard netminder Alex Pellicci for the 3-0 lead.
Khramtsov's goal was the last on the day for Princeton, but the Tigers held on for the win. Gabi Davidson Adams put back a rebound on a Crimson power-play chance with seven-plus minutes to go in the third to get Harvard on the board, and on a Princeton power play with just less than nine minutes left in the game, Anne Bloomer stole a Princeton pass and sent it forward for Kristin Della Rovere, who saw Hyland stop her initial shot before Bloomer put the rebound in to make it 3-2.
Princeton stopped the comeback there and will head to Dartmouth for a 3 p.m. start Saturday aiming for the weekend sweep.
