No. 14 Princeton Finishes Weekend Sweep of Mercyhurst
November 11, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Ten players scored points on five Tiger goals as the No. 14-ranked Princeton women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Mercyhurst with a 5-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink.
Mia Coene opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game after Kate Monihan intercepted a Mercyhurst clearing attempt and sent it back to Coene in the slot for the finish.
Princeton scored another early-period goal in the second, with Emma Dornseif getting her first collegiate goal on a redirect of an Issy Wunder puck sent toward goal just a minute into the period.
Princeton built the lead to 4-0 and saw it get trimmed by one with a span that saw the teams combine for three goals in a span of less than four minutes. Maggie Johnson scored a power-play goal more than seven minutes into the period when she tipped a Dominique Cormier blast, and just 81 seconds later, Wunder got her first of what became two goals when she redirected an Emerson O'Leary try just before the midpoint of the period to give Princeton the 4-0 lead. Rookie blueliner Gabby Kim had an assist on each of Princeton's two goals in that stretch, earning her first two career points.
Mercyhurst got on the board with less than nine minutes to go before the final ice cut with a long Megan McKay blast on a power play, and Wunder regained the four-goal lead for Princeton just 22 seconds into a 5-on-3 with less than seven minutes to go in the game, swiping in a puck that Sarah Paul and then O'Leary put on goal.
The two-goal game was Wunder's third as a Tiger, adding to two last season as a rookie.
Uma Corniea made a career-high 32 saves to finish a two-win weekend.
The Tigers will head to Colgate and Cornell next weekend in returning to ECAC Hockey play.
