Perhaps it was inevitable that the first Ivy League field hockey tournament would come down to Princeton and Harvard as the last teams standing. After all, these two have dominated Ivy field hockey for the past 20 years, with either one or the other as the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
Both had tough semifinal games Friday, and both won those games 1-0 — Princeton over Cornell and Harvard over Penn. Now they meet Sunday at 1 at Harvard for the first league tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Princeton vs. Harvard
Five storylines
Recent history
Including the games Friday, Princeton and Harvard are a combined 69-1 against the rest of the league since the start of the 2017 season. That one loss was Princeton's double overtime loss to Penn earlier this season.
The last time that neither Princeton nor Harvard won at least a share of the Ivy League title was back in 1993. Since then, only three times has another team even won a piece of the championship: Brown and Princeton in 1999, Penn and Harvard in 2004 and Princeton and Yale in 2011.
Princeton leads the all-time series 43-9-2.
The last time around
Harvard defeated Princeton 4-0 on Oct. 14, getting two goals in the second quarter and two goals in the fourth quarter. Princeton was outshot 16-3 in that game, which was the last time the Tigers played on Bedford Field.
Since then, Princeton has not lost, including winning back-to-back games in which it was facing elimination had it not won.
History lesson
Princeton and Harvard meet for the second time this season.
Since Carla Tagliente became Princeton head coach in 2016, Princeton has played a team in the postseason that it had played earlier in the regular season nine times. The team that lost the regular season game is 6-3 in the rematch, including Princeton's 2018 NCAA tournament win over Harvard after the Crimson had won in the regular season.
Close games
Princeton has played its last 132 minutes either tied or ahead by one goal. Princeton has played 16 games this year, and 11 of those have been decided by a single goal.
D-plus
Princeton shut out Cornell 1-0 in the semifinals. Cornell came in as the highest scoring team in Division I with Division I's leading scorer, but the Big Red did not score a goal in a game for the first time this season.
Princeton held Cornell to 0 for 10 on penalty corners.
