Tigers Rally Past No. 3 Colgate to Take ECAC Quarterfinals Opener
February 24, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Seeking a repeat of last season's ECAC Hockey quarterfinal round road series win, the Princeton women's hockey team got off to the right start Friday night in Hamilton, N.Y., rallying past second-seeded and national No. 3-ranked Colgate 3-2 to open the best-of-three series.
All five goals on the night came in the final two periods, and all three second-period goals came on the power play. Colgate bookended Emerson O'Leary's then-tying goal to take a 2-1 lead into the second ice cut, with Kaitlyn O'Donohoe giving the Raiders the lead and Dara Greig scoring to put Colgate back in front after O'Leary tied it. O'Leary jammed in a loose puck off a rebound to tie it at 1-1 with less than five minutes to go in the period before Greig restored the one-goal Colgate lead in the final minute.
After Colgate's go-ahead goal from Greig in the last minute of the second period, Maggie Connors tied it again for Princeton with a goal less than a minute into the third, providing the finish off of quick passes in the offensive zone from each of the Fillier sisters to knot it at 2-2.
The eventual game-winning goal came from Sarah Fillier, who took a pass forward from Emma Kee and got behind the Colgate defense for a one-on-one with Raiders goalie Kayle Osborne.
The win came despite Colgate outshooting the Tigers 63-44 overall and 34-29 on goal, with rookie Taylor Hyland making 32 saves for the win.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. back at Colgate. A Princeton win would send the Tigers on to the single-elimination ECAC Hockey semifinals next weekend at the highest remaining seed. A Colgate win would force a third game Sunday at 3 p.m., also at Colgate.
