Schenck, Yeager Lead Princeton Past Cornell 3-1
October 04, 2024 | Field Hockey
Beth Yeager waited, waited and waited some more. By the time she threaded her pass to Talia Schenk, there were four Cornell defenders who were staring at her — none of whom saw that there was no one between Schenk and the cage other than Big Red goalie Martha Broderick.
The result of the play? Schenck drilled it into the right corner, giving Princeton its third goal of the day and prettiest of the year.
The result of the game? It was Princeton 3, Cornell 1, improving Princeton to 3-0 in the Ivy League and 6-3 overall as it heads to Syracuse Sunday to complete its weekend in Central New York.
Schenck also had Princeton's first goal of the day, giving her the first multiple goal game of her career. Yeager scored the middle Tiger goal, off a beautiful give and go from Ottilie Sykes on a penalty corner.
Princeton had a 17-3 edge in shots and a 10-1 edge in corners. Cornell spoiled the shutout with a goal with three minutes to play.
On a day when every healthy field player was on for major minutes, Princeton took the lead when Schenck took a pass from Yeager, dribbled into the circle and reversed one over Broderick five minutes into the second quarter.
The lead doubled when Yeager took the ball off the insert on a corner, passed it to Sykes, who dribbled and then fed it back to Yeager, who lifted it into the back of the net. Schenck sealed it with her second, which came midway through the fourth.
Princeton remained unbeaten on Fridays this season.
