No. 14 Princeton Falls To No. 15 Syracuse 2-1 On Late Goal
October 06, 2024 | Field Hockey
The main goal of Princeton's weekend trip to Central New York was to get to 3-0 in the Ivy League. Getting to 2-1 in the ACC would have been a nice bonus.
No. 15 Syracuse scored one goal early and one goal late to defeat No. 14 Princeton at Coyne Stadium Sunday afternoon. The loss came two days after Princeton had beaten Cornell 3-1 to stay unbeaten in the Ivy League.
As for the game Sunday, Princeton had beaten Louisville and lost to North Carolina earlier this season in the ACC/Ivy League Crossover Challenge. This time it was a single game against the Orange, and, given the close proximity of the teams in the poll, it's not surprising it was a close one.
Syracuse's Willemijn Boogert redirected a feed into the cage past Princeton's Robyn Thompson just 2:43 into the game, and things stayed that way through the rest of the first quarter, all of the second quarter and into the third quarter before the Tigers tied it. The goal was scored by Beth Yeager, set up beautifully by Anna Faulstich, who took the ball to the endline, curled into the circle and fed it to Yeager in the middle, who snapped it in for her seventh of the season.
Thompson made six saves in the game, none bigger than on a breakaway attempt from Sara Smalley seven minutes into the fourth. It was two minutes later, though, when the Orange scored what would be the game-winner off a penalty corner, with 5:17 to play.
Princeton, now 6-4 overall in addition to 3-0 in the league, has played eight of its 10 games on the road. The Tigers will now play five of their final six at home, beginning this coming weekend against Brown Friday and Delaware Sunday.
