Fillier's Hat Trick Ignites No. 12 Princeton to Weekend-Opening Win at Union
February 16, 2024 | Women's Ice Hockey
Princeton senior Sarah Fillier had her fourth career hat trick and 100th career assist as part of a four-point night that turned a tie game into a 5-1 Princeton win on Friday night at Union to begin the final weekend of the regular season.
The hat trick was Fillier's second of the season, along with one on Dec. 5 at LIU. The three goals lifted her to 86 for her career, one goal out of a tie for seventh-most in program history, and, with the assist on the final goal, 186 career points as she remained fourth on that program list.
Union had the first goal of the night on a Maddie Leaney goal just past the midway point of the first period, but five-plus minutes later, Annie Kuehl took the puck nearly coast to coast to tie it.
That goal started a run of three in 1:17 for Princeton, with Fillier getting the next two. With less than four minutes to go in the first period, Emerson O'Leary had a takeaway at center ice, and after a quick touch from Issy Wunder, O'Leary skated the puck into the slot and found Fillier at the left post for the finish and the 2-1 lead just 34 seconds after Kuehl tied it.
Just 43 seconds after Fillier put Princeton up 2-1, she made it 3-1 after O'Leary won the draw to the right of Union netminder Sophie Matsoukas and flipped the puck to Fillier for a blast from the top of the circle.
Fillier's final goal came just before the midway point of the second period when she put back a rebound for a 4-1 lead and her 86th career goal.
The final goal of the night came from Gabby Kim as the rookie netted her second career goal, taking a centering pass from Fillier and firing it home from the slot with three-plus minutes to go. O'Leary had an assist on the goal, giving the sophomore a career-high four assists on the night.
Princeton outshot the Garnet Chargers 45-30 overall and 27-13 on goal with Uma Corniea making 12 stops in the win.
Princeton will play its regular-season finale Saturday at 3 p.m. at RPI and will find out its opponent for next Saturday's ECAC Hockey opening-round game at Baker Rink.
