No. 4 Heavies Battle For Childs Cup Saturday vs. No. 9 Penn and No. 16 Columbia

PRINCETON – The No. 4 Princeton Men's Heavyweight Rowing Team hosts the No. 9 Penn Quakers and No. 16 Columbia Lions at Lake Carnegie on Saturday for the Childs Cup.
The Childs Cup is the oldest cup event in collegiate sports, first raced for in 1879 on the Schuylkill River. Princeton has won 11 straight Childs Cup and 26 of the last 27. The Tigers lead the all-time series over Penn and Columbia, 52-44-12.
"We look forward to racing for the oldest collegiate cup," said Matt Smith, associate head coach said. "The Childs Cup was started in 1879 when they raced 6s and 8s. Everyone is excited to race thsi weekend at home."
Princeton is 4-0 this season, earning victories over No. 17 Drexel, No. 18 Georgetown and No. 23 Temple in the first weekend of the regular season.
Fighting through rough weather conditions, the Tigers swept the races on the Severn River against the Naval Academy Midshipmen last weekend.
The Tigers earned the Navy-Princeton Cup (5:44.1) with a 6.1-second decision in the first event of the day. As the weather got worse, the 2V crossed the line at 5:52.0 in front of Navy by over 18 seconds (6:10.6).
Princeton's 3V (5:52.1) also collected a victory (6:00.8) as did the 4V (6:03.0) in a close race (6:03.6). The 5V event was cancelled and shortened to 1,000m because of the weather.
Recently, Nick Mead '17 was named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team. He will race in either four or eight for the United States. He was recently named the 2023 US Rowing Athlete of the Year. Mead helped the United States four to a silver medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships, the best finish for a U.S. boat since 2017. He also helped the four to third at 2023 World Rowing Cup II regatta.
Sebastain Benzecry '20 helped Cambridge to a victory in the annual Oxford-Cambridge Boatrace by 3 ½ lengths last weekend. Jacob Intrater '23 lead the Cambridge lightweight eight to a win as well.
