No. 13/14 Women’s Hockey Nets Five To Record Seventh Consecutive Victory
January 04, 2025 | Women's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y.- The Tigers started the season with a 2-4 record. Now, Princeton has extended their win streak to seven games in a row and has come out on top in 10 of its last 11 games with today's 5-2 victory over the Union Garnet Chargers.
Sarah Paul started the scoring off after a back and forth first period. Emerson O'Leary took advantage of the Union defender losing the puck and sent the pass over to Paul. Garnet Chargers keeper Sophie Matsoukas stood no chance as Paul fired the puck into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Princeton pumped up the pressure with three shots on goal to start off the second period and it paid off. Issy Wunder took a shot and shoveled in her own rebound for her nineteenth goal of the season.
At the 8:33 mark, the Garnet Chargers were back on the power play, their third of the game. The Tigers were able to successfully kill the power play and held Union to just one shot on goal. Angelina DiGirolamo received the puck on a wide shot by Union's Paige Greco and sent it down the ice to none other than Lucia DiGirolamo on the breakaway right out of the penalty box. One move later and Lucia gave Princeton a 3-0 advantage.
Union cut into the deficit with Kendal Davidson's first goal of the season with less than two minutes left in the frame.
The Garnet Chargers killed off a power play of their own and with the momentum in their favor, found their second score of the game thanks to Danica Mark's first career tally.
The score was a bit too close for comfort for Paul and the Tigers as she made a move around the Union defender and sent the puck in the goal for her second of the night.
In a last ditch attempt, Matsoukas was pulled from the goal. Mia Coene won the faceoff in the offensive end and took a shot that was blocked by Maren Friday who tipped the puck ahead. Lucia intercepted the pass and scored the empty netter for two goals on the night and four on the weekend.
Princeton's seven game win streak is the fourth longest in program history and the victory was a full team effort. Angelina, Lucia, Wunder, Emerson O'Leary and Paul each recorded two points on the night with Gabby Kim, Jane Kuehl and Dominque Cormier adding one apiece. Jennifer Olnowich made 20 stops in net for her seventh straight 20+ save game.
Wunder's goal and assist bumped her points per game average up to 2.18 for the top number in the nation.
The Tigers will be back on the road next weekend with rematches against Quinnipiac on Jan. 10 and Yale on Jan. 11 on the calendar.
