No. 6 Princeton Rolls Past No. 13 Monmouth 5-1
October 19, 2025 | Field Hockey
In a 5-1 win, like the one that sixth-ranked Princeton hung on No. 13 Monmouth Sunday afternoon on Bedford Field, it's unusual for a defensive sequence to be the most important moment of the game. That was, in fact, the case in this one.
Â
Princeton led 2-0 and seemed to be in control late in the third quarter when Monmouth attacked the Tiger goal off a penalty corner. In a matter of seconds the Hawks fired off five shots on the Princeton cage. Had any of them gone in, the whole tone of the game would have changed on a dime. Instead, Princeton came up with four saves, two impressive ones from goalie Olivia Caponiti and equally impressive defensive saves from Ella Cashman and Ottilie Sykes.
Â
By the time the quarter ended Molly Nye tucked in a goal, her fourth in five games, and the Tigers were back in control at 3-0. The lead grew to 4-0 on Caitlin Thompson's goal from Beth Yeager — who had Princeton's first two goals — on a penalty corner, and, after Monmouth got on the board, Thompson added her second to finish it.
Though Princeton put up a season-best 30 shots, Monmouth goalie Charlie Bowman had a spectacular day, making 15 saves, none better than on Yeager's reverse blast just before the third quarter horn sounded.
Â
Caponiti made five saves of her own, and Sykes had a pair of defensive saves.
Â
Yeager moved into tie with Katie Reinprecht for third all-time at Princeton with 53 career goals. Thompson's two gave her five goals, all in the last five games.
Â
Princeton and Monmouth are both 10-3 now. The Hawks are 10-0 against all other leagues other than the Ivy, with their other losses to Harvard and Yale. Princeton's penalty corner defense held Monmouth to an 0 for 5 day, after the Hawks came in leading Division I in penalty corner efficiency.
Â
Princeton will be at Brown Friday at 2:30.
