No. 10 Princeton Tops ODU 2-1 In Opener
September 05, 2025 | Field Hockey
Ottilie Sykes scored the goals early and Gabriella Anderson and Libby Smith stopped the goals late to give No. 10 Princeton a 2-1 win over Old Dominion Friday night in the Tiger season opener.
The game was the second of the day on Bedford Field, after No. 2 UNC defeated Penn 6-2 in the opening game of the Tiger Invitational. The Ivy teams will reverse opponents Sunday, with Penn-ODU at 11 am and then Princeton-UNC at 1:30.
Sykes and Yeager scored goals 90 seconds apart in the first five minutes of the game, Sykes on a blast off a penalty corner and Yeager on a sweet reverse just inside the circle. From there, ODU tightened up defensively, taking away the passing lanes that Princeton had used to get on the board.
Smith, a sophomore making her first career appearance and start, made two saves in the fourth quarter, including one on a chance in close with just over a minute to go. Anderson, a freshman, made a huge defensive play of her own in the fourth quarter, stopping what otherwise might have been a one-on-one chance on Smith.

Princeton's defense was also strong, not allowing any Monarch shots in the first half and only four for the night. ODU, the preseason No. 2 selection in the Big East, got on the board off a penalty corner of its own in the third quarter and then had three of its shots in the fourth quarter. And the first goal of the year belongs to ...
