Ashley Kilstein was named assistant coach of the Princeton women's hockey team on July 1, 2016.
The Tigers have qualified for the ECAC playoffs in each of the last two seasons, reaching the semifinals in her first year behind the bench. The 2017 team went 20-10-3 with the ECAC Rookie of the Year Carly Bullock, ECAC Goalie of the Year Stephanie Neatby and first-team All-America Kelsey Koelzer. In 2017-18, Princeton posted a 2-0 shutout over No. 1 ranked Clarkson, the eventual national champion, and finished the season 14-14-4.
She came to Princeton having spent the previous five seasons as head coach of the women's hockey team at Plymouth State in New Hampshire.
Kilstein took the Plymouth State program, a program that had two wins in six years, to the most wins in program history, its highest conference standing and consecutive post-season appearances.
The 2013 ECAC East Coach of the Year and finalist for the America Hockey Coaches Association DIII Coach of the Year, Kilstein's team was successful both on and off the ice at Plymouth State. She mentored more than 25 student-athletes each season to help earn the highest overall team GPA and captured 37 ECAC All-Academic honors in four years.
Outside of her coaching and recruiting duties, Kilstein was also in charge of her own team's administrative duties, equipment and fundraising and giving and charity events. Additionally she carried out administrative duties in the athletics department as the sole administrator of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, acted as the Social Media Coordinator, was involved in fall/spring game management and taught hockey and fitness classes on campus.
Kilstein was elected to the NCAA Women's Hockey Ethics Sub Committee to advise colleagues with compliance questions in regarding to NCAA Division III standards and in the protection of the student-athlete.
Prior to joining Plymouth State, she spent the 2010-11 season as an assistant women's coach at Williams College.
Kilstein is no stranger to the ECAC Hockey League as a 2008 graduate of Union College where she earned a degree in English. She led her team in scoring in 2004-05 and was nominated for the league's Rookie of the Year. She was named the "Unsung Hero" in 2007-08. Kilstein made such an impact at Union with her fundraising efforts, than an annual award is given each year in her name. The award is given for dedication to the community of Union College, being an outstanding citizen and volunteering in the community.
She has been involved in a number of hockey camps including the International Hockey Experience Camp, which she developed and directed. She has been a part of the USA Hockey Select Camp coaching staffs since 2013, and is currently head coach of the Rocky Mountain District Select Camp and Massachusetts Select Camp. Kilstein has been the HOA Hockey Head Coach/Girls Director since 2011, been with the Rinksport College Prep Hockey Program since 2011, a program she originally joined in 2005 as a counselor/coach, and with the National Collegiate Development Camp since 2010.
Kilstein went on to earn an MS in legal studies from Albany Law School and was a legal assistant at Redlich Law Firm in Albany or two years.
