BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Joe Shipp scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures as California defeated Princeton 70-58 on Thursday night in the opening round of the Black Coaches Association Classic.
The Bears (1-0) will play Eastern Washington, a 68-67 winner over No. 10 St. Joseph's, in Friday's championship game.
Shipp is expected to help the Golden Bears replace Sean Lampley, last season's Pacific-10 Conference player of the year and Cal's leading career scorer. Shipp made 6-of-11 shots and added four rebounds and four assists as Cal cruised to an easy victory over the Ivy League champion Tigers.
Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Dennis Gates had 11 points apiece for Cal, while Jamal Sampson added 10.
Princeton was led by Konrad Wysocki with 17 points and Mike Bechtold with 11. The Tigers shot 57 percent from the field, but committed 24 turnovers.
After Cal's Shantay Legans hit a half-court shot at the halftime buzzer, the Bears went on a 15-6 run to start the second half to open up the biggest lead of the game at 59-34. Princeton finished the game with an 18-6 run.
The teams split their previous two meetings, with Cal winning 55-52 in the opening round of the 1997 NCAA tournament.
