Miami - Princeton's trip to Miami was no day at the beach.
Florida International used a 12-1 run midway through the second half to take control en route to a 49-44 win over Princeton in front of 1,017 at the Golden Panther Arena Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped Princeton to 0-3 on the young season after losses to California and St. Joe's in a tournament in Berkeley to open the season. Princeton has its home opener Wednesday night against Rider.
FIU, coached by former College of New Jersey coach Donnie Marsh, improved to 3-1.
Princeton led 20-19 at halftime and 32-27 midway through the second half when FIU began its run, grabbing a 39-33 lead. Carlos Morban led the run for FIU with two dunks and a three-pointer.
FIU led by five with less than a minute to play, but Konrad Wysocki's three-pointer made it 46-44. After Rodrigo Viegas made one of two free throws with 15 seconds remaining, Kyle Wente missed a three that would have tied it. Morban made two free throws with 2.4 seconds to play to seal it. Princeton was hurt by a tough shooting day. The Tigers, who came into the game having shot almost 50% for the first two games, was 16 for 44 against FIU, including 6 for 26 from three-point range.
Mike Bechtold led the Tigers with 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting, 3 of 6 from three-point range. Bechtold was also one rebound off his career high with six.
Konrad Wysocki and Andre Logan each scored nine points for Princeton before fouling out. Only five Princeton players score, as Ahmed El-Nokali and Ray Robins had five each.
Morban was the only Golden Panther in double figures with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting.
FIU shot 8 for 12 from the field in the second half.
