Easton, Pa. - Will Venable had a career high 23 points and Spencer Gloger added 22 points and seven rebounds as Princeton raced past Lafayette 89-75 in front of 2,683 at the Kirby Field House Saturday night.
Venable and Gloger shot a combined 17 for 24 from the field on a night when Princeton shot 64% as a team.
"I thought our offensive performance was pretty good today," said Princeton coach John Thompson. "We have guys who can make shots, and when holes are there, we have guys who can get to the basket. We just have to keep growing. We have some things we need to concentrate on."
Princeton, building on the momentum of Tuesday night's win over Monmouth on Ed Persia's 85-foot shot at the buzzer, improved to 3-2 on the young season. Lafayette slipped to 0-5. Neither team struggled offensively as the teams combined to shoot 58 for 101 from the field and 20 for 42 from three-point range. Lafayette shot exactly 50% from the field and from three-point range, but the Leopards could never put any serious pressure on the Tigers.
Princeton scored on its first four possessions of the game and built an 18-point halftime lead. Lafayette would get no closer than 10 in the second half.
Venable, whose previous career best was 18 last year against Lafayette, had 15 points on 6 for 6 shooting in the first half. He would finish with 9 for 12 shooting on the night, just slightly better than Gloger's 8 for 12.
Ray Robins had 18 points, four rebounds and four assists and provided Princeton's highlight of the night with a two-handed reverse dunk off an alley-oop pass from Persia, who himself had seven points, a career-best seven rebounds and four assists. Judson Wallace had eight points and seven rebounds as Princeton outrebounded Lafayette 34-19.
Lafayette had four players in double figures, led by Mike Farrell's 17.
Princeton is off until next Saturday, Dec. 14, when the Tigers host Rutgers (7:30).
