CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Lauren Ehrlichman and Lauren Quinn are the only two members of the Princeton field hockey team from Massachusetts. And in their wildest dreams, they probably couldn't have imagined a better homecoming.
Ehrlichman put the Tigers ahead for good with a goal 5:19 into the second half and Quinn added an unassisted goal just 1:33 after that as the eighth-ranked Tigers clinched at least a share of their 10th straight Ivy title with a 3-2 win over No. 15 Harvard at Jordan Field Saturday afternoon.
"All season long we've talked about converting on opportunities when we get them," said Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn. "We knew that Harvard was an opportunistic team from our scouting reports, but today we were the ones that took advantage when we needed to." Princeton (10-3, 6-0 Ivy) now needs only to win at Penn Nov. 7 to clinch an outright Ivy title and a fourth straight undefeated league season. Harvard (10-4, 4-1 Ivy) can still share the league championship if it defeats Columbia and Dartmouth and Princeton loses at Penn.
Ehrlichman, a Wellesley native, scored her fifth goal of the season at the 29:41 mark of the second half to give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. Her initial shot was saved by Harvard goalie Katie Zacarian, but the sophomore kept control of the rebound and drove the ball past Zacarian to give Princeton a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers then counterattacked just moments later to take a 3-1 advantage that proved to be insurmountable. Natalie Martirosian started a Princeton attack near midfield, and Quinn, a Watertown native, punched a shot past Zacarian to give her team a two-goal lead with 28:08 left.
Harvard outshot the Tigers 18-10 and had 10 penalty corners, including seven in the second half, but only a Jen McDavitt goal with 11.9 seconds left in the game pulled the Crimson closer than two goals at the end. Allison Nemeth, the reigning Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week, had six saves in goal for Princeton to improve to a perfect 8-0 on the season.
The Crimson, who lost to the Tigers for the 10th straight year, jumped ahead 1-0 13 minutes into the game thanks to senior Mina Pell. Pell controlled a loose ball in front of Nemeth and shoved it past the Princeton goalie.
Princeton tied the game with 6:25 left in the first half thanks to some terrific individual play by Kelly Darling and Maren Ford. A Darling run forced Zacarian out of the goal area, and the junior then found an open Ford inside the circle. Ford then controlled a bouncing ball and one-timed a shot into the open net past several Harvard defenders.
The win was Princeton's 30th straight in Ivy League play dating back to a loss at Brown in 1999. The Tigers are 65-1 in league games since the beginning of the 1994 season.
Princeton plays at Boston University on Sunday, looking to avenge a 2-0 loss at the hand of the Terriers last season. But the main business of the weekend was an Ivy League title, and two players from right down the street made sure the Tigers felt right at home at Harvard.
