Maren Ford and Claire Miller each scored goals in a 1:55 span early in the first half as the 10th-ranked Princeton field hockey team won its 28th straight Ivy League game with a 2-0 victory over Cornell at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Princeton (6-2, 4-0) had eight shots in the first 10 minutes of the game before connecting on consecutive shots to take a two-goal lead. Ford's goal came as a result of a nice crossing pass from Natalie Martirosian, who collected a ball on the right wing and sent a feed to a wide-open Ford 11:35 into the first half. A similar situation less than two minutes later led to Miller's goal as the senior collected a rebound from Cornell goalie Kaitlin Tierney and scored with 21:30 left in the half. ?We worked in practice this week on playing balls into space and using our speed to our advantage,? said Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn. ?We showed great awareness on both goals in finding that open space.?
Cornell (2-7, 1-3) stayed in the game in the second half thanks to the play of goalie Tierney, who had seven of her 11 saves in the final 35 minutes. The Big Red's best scoring opportunity came late in the first half, but Princeton goalie Juliana Simon stopped a Kimmy Gardner shot on a penalty-corner situation.
The Tigers, who defeated Cornell for the 11th straight year, outshot the Big Red 23-7, including 15-2 in the first half. Princeton also had 13 penalty corners to just four for Cornell, which last defeated Princeton in 1990.
?We came out and played a very disciplined game in the first half,? said Holmes-Winn, whose Tigers notched their first shutout in eight games this season. ?You have to give credit to Cornell for picking up their game in the second half.?
Princeton's 28-game league winning streak dates back to a loss at Brown in October 1999. The Tigers are 4-0 in league play this year, finished a perfect 7-0 in league games in 2002, 2001 and 2000 and won their final three Ivy games in 1999.
