On the scoreboard, it's been a frustrating season for the Princeton field hockey team. Saturday at Class of 1952 Stadium, the Tigers took out some of that frustration on Brown in the first of three key Ivy League games.
Blitzing the Brown net with 47 shots overall and 32 shots on goal, the Tigers got two goals from Kelly Darling and a goal and an assist from Paige Schmidt in a 6-0 victory over the Bears that was as dominating a performance as it possibly could be.
Princeton (4-8, 3-1 Ivy) outshot Brown (4-7, 1-3 Ivy) 47-4 and had 15 penalty corners to just one for the Bears. The Tigers peppered Brown starting goalie Kristen Hodavance early and often, scoring three times in the first 20 minutes, though Hodavance made an incredible 19 saves in just 45 minutes of action. The Tigers led 4-0 at halftime, outshooting the Bears 28-3 in the first 35 minutes. Maren Ford scored an unassisted goal from the top of the circle with 4:26 gone in the half, and Lauren Quinn then scored on a spectacular length-of-the-field run with 17:55 on the first-half clock. Princeton was awarded a penalty stroke after a Brown violation in the circle two minutes later, and Lizzie Black's shot found the back of the net despite a diving deflection by Hodavance.
Princeton took a 4-0 lead into halftime thanks to Darling's first goal, which came after Schmidt fed a pass near the left post.
Schmidt scored on a hard drive from the top of the circle eight minutes into the second half to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead, and Darling would get her second goal of the game with 1:40 left when she tipped in Lizzie Black's drive on a penalty-corner situation.
Princeton won its second 6-0 game in Ivy League play this year. The Tigers defeated Yale by the same 6-0 score Sept. 11.
The Tigers play at Cornell in an Ivy League game Sunday at noon. Princeton returns home next Saturday to face Harvard in a game that could have Ivy championship implications.
