Box Score
Holly Cram scored for Richmond on a penalty-corner situation 2:50 into the first half and goalie Michelle Swartz made five second-half saves, including two in succession on a Princeton penalty-corner attempt with 12 minutes left, as the No. 11-ranked Spiders defeated the Tigers, 1-0, in a field hockey game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Sunday morning.
Richmond (8-2) held on after Cram's early goal despite being outshot 11-2 in the second half. Princeton (3-7) appeared to have tied the game on a penalty-corner situation in the final 30 seconds, but Paige Schmidt's initial shot was ruled too high and the goal was disallowed.
The Tigers nearly tied the game 12 minutes earlier on another penalty-corner attempt. Swartz dove to her right to save Alexis Martirosian's shot and then stood up to stop Maren Ford's rebound attempt a few seconds later. Cram scored for Richmond on the first penalty-corner attempt for either team in the game. After Michelle La Force stopped the initial push and fed to Cram, the junior from Scotland stickhandled to the right of the circle and pushed a shot past Princeton goalie Juliana Simon.
Princeton controlled play for much of the second half, holding Richmond to just one shot in the first 20 minutes of the half. The Tigers had six second-half penalty corners, but Swartz and the Spider defense combined to stop every one.
The Spiders had seven first-half penalty corners, including one as the first half expired, but went into halftime with just a one-goal lead. Richmond outshot the Tigers 7-3 in the first half, but Princeton outshot the Spiders 14-9 for the game.
The Tigers also had a good chance to tie the game midway through the second half, but Natalie Martirosian's tip-in attempt on a Lizzie Black drive went over the crossbar and out of bounds.
Princeton has a week off before its next game, at Virginia next Sunday afternoon.
