Princeton Falls To CMU Despite Record 25 From Davis
November 14, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Doug Davis had his own personal cheering section in the north stands of Jadwin Gym Friday night as a huge turnout from the Hun School came to see their favorite son's debut, and the former Raider gave them plenty to cheer about.
Davis rocked Jadwin with 25 points in his first game as a Princeton Tiger, setting a record for the most points ever by a Princeton freshman in his first career game and putting up the highest total by a Princeton player in his first game since Bill Bradley scored 28 against Lafayette in 1962.
Unfortunately for Davis and the Tigers, Central Michigan spoiled the party to hold on for a 55-53 win on opening night at Jadwin.
"We lost the game," Davis said. "That's really what we're thinking about now. We lost by two points, which means that you can point to anything that happened in the game as being crucial. Another steal, another rebound, might have made the difference."
Davis saved his best for last, as he scored six points in the final 49 seconds as the Tigers nearly erased all of an 11-point deficit to pull out the win. The Tigers trailed 52-47 when Davis scored on a layup with 49 seconds left, and he followed with a steal and another tough layup to make it a one-point game with 30 seconds to go.
Robbie Harman then made both ends of a one-and-one to make the lead three again, but Davis drained a long shot that last year would have been a tying three and this year, with the three-point mark moved back a foot, was a two with his foot on the line. Harman then made one of his next two foul shots, but Princeton could not get a shot off in the final eight seconds.
Davis would play all 40 minutes, scoring his 25 on 10 of 21 shooting, including 4 of 9 three-point shooting. He added four steals and four rebounds.
"I watched a lot of games last year," Davis said. "I thought of myself attending the school, but I didn't really think about being out on the court."
Davis was the only Princeton player in double figures. Zach Finley, who didn't start because of a hand injury, had nine points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench.
Central Michigan was led by senior Chris Kellerman's 28.
Princeton is home Wednesday night against Maine.
