Track & Field Begins Training in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. (3/19/09) ? The Princeton track and field teams are in Florida this spring break training for the upcoming 2009 outdoor season. The team began competition on Tuesday, March 17 at the National Training Center Collegiate Series.
Alex Pessala continues his impressive senior season, posting a personal-best 62.57 meters in the hammer throw to win the event and qualify for the NCAA Regional. Junior Joel Karacozoff and sophomore Craig Pearce also posted NCAA Regional qualifying throws of 57.12 and 60.01, respectively.
Sophomore George Abyad won the discus with a throw of 51.93 meeting qualifying standards. Karacozoff was second, reaching 47.72.
Freshman David Slovenski earned a win in the pole vault reaching 5.15, to qualify for NCAA regionals, with freshman Derek Hynes and junior Chad Faulkner taking second and third place with matching 4.80's.
The Tigers placed first in the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw. Freshman Patrick Park threw the shot put 16.15 and was third in the discus reaching 44.25.
Sophomore George Abyad won the discus with a throw of 51.93, while Tim Lanni was second in the shot put with a toss of 14.55.
Junior Tom Zozokos and senior Ian Thomson competed in the 400-meter hurdles. Zozokos finished in 53.47, while Thomson completed the race in 55.95.
In the high jump, junior Ian Fox cleared 1.98 for second place, while classmate Scott Henkelman reached 1.72 for third place. Fox went on to win the long jump with a leap of 6.48 while Henkelman was third with a jump of 6.29. Senior Steve Slovenski placed second with a jump of 6.35 David Slovenski and Derek Hynes along with Faulkner also competed.
On the women's side, freshman Lydia Arias was the lone competitor in the pole vault. She reached 3.53 meters in her try of the spring season. The Tigers placed sophomore Emma Ruggiero and freshman Alyssa Pehmoeller in the hammer throw. Ruggiero was the top collegiate competitor taking second with a throw of 49.77 while Pehmoeller made 42.43.
