Princeton Wins Season Opener, 3-2 at Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. (10/23/15) - The Princeton women's hockey kick started the 2015-16 season with a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Complex.
Senior Cristin Shanahan scored the game-winning goal in the third period, while juniors Morgan Sly and Audrey Potts both posted two-point games. Senior Kimberly Newell stopped 28 shots in her 35th career victory.
Sly was the first goal scorer of the year for the Tigers as she put the team on top 1-0 in the with less than five minutes to play in the first period. Freshman Karlie Lund earned her first career point and got the play started when she halted a transition at the blue line. Potts got the deflected puck and banked it off the boards and back to Lund who took off down the left side. With Sly skating down the right, Lund sent her the cross-ice pass and and Sly went five-hole for the goal.
The lead was short-lived however, when Emily Janiga tied it at 19:15. There was a battle for the buck along the back boards and the puck was squeezed out to the slot where Janiga was there to put the puck over the left shoulder of Newell.
Potts and Sly teammed up for goal #2, just 2:30 into the second period. Freshman Kimiko Marinacci halted a breakout and dumped the puck back in where Sly won a foot race to the puck. She swept the puck underneath a defender and Potts put it away.
Another late period goal from the Lakers knotted the game once again. Rachael Smith scored a rebound at 19:23 as the teams ended the second at 2-2.
Shanahan scored the game winner at 11:21 of the third with juniors Molly Contini and Kelsey Koelzer assisting.
Mercyhurst outshot Princeton 30-24 in the game, with Jessica Convery stopping 21 shots for the Lakers.
Princeton was 0 for 4 on the power play and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill.
Mercyhurst and Princeton will battle it out again tomorrow afternoon to complete the two-game series. Game time is at 2 p.m.
