Picking up a sweep on its trip to the Hampton Roads area, the Princeton men's basketball team built a lead and withstood a comeback in an 83-74 win at Norfolk State Tuesday night.
Princeton finished the game shooting 54.9 percent from the field and making 10 3-pointers, outdoing the Spartans' 43.8 percent clip from the field including just 5 of 19 from distance.
Henry Caruso led the Tigers with 16 points as one of four players in double figures. Rookie Myles Stephens upped his career best with 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
Norfolk State scored on its first four possessions to get out to a 9-0 lead less than three minutes into the game before Princeton fought back to tie it at 13-13 on a pair of Caruso free throws with 14 minutes until the half.
Leading 30-29 with less than three minutes before the half, Princeton closed the first frame on a 10-2 run to take a 40-31 lead into the locker room.
Princeton broke the lead open as the half reached its midway point, pushing the advantage to 20 for the first time on a Pete Miller bucket with 5:38 to go that made it 71-51.
Though Princeton led by as many as 22 points, Norfolk State went on a 15-0 run beginning with less than four minutes to go to shrink the deficit as low as seven at 77-70 with 51 seconds left, but the Spartans got no closer.
As on Sunday afternoon at Hampton, the Tigers were able to spread the minutes with the team's Ivy League opener coming up Saturday afternoon at Penn, with no Tiger playing more than 23 minutes and 14 players seeing the court.
