No. 11 Princeton faces off against the other undefeated team in the Ivy League, No. 20 Harvard on Saturday (12 p.m.) at Bedford Field. The game is available on the Ivy League Digital Network.
What's Going On?
- Princeton stands at 9-5 this year and 4-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers had an outstanding weekend, defeating Brown 5-1 on Saturday and Towson, 8-0 on Sunday.
- Senior Cat Caro scored her first career hat trick as the Tigers scored four times in the first half to drop Brown, 5-1. The Tigers outshot the Bears, 27-2, and held a 9-0 advantage in penalty corners.
- In its 8-0 victory over Towson, Princeton secured five tallies in the first 35 minutes to run away with the contest. After going 67 career games without a hat trick, Caro had two in consecutive games as she recorded three tallies vs. Towson.
- With her performance over the weekend, Caro was selected as the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week and Coach USA Princeton Athlete of the Week. It's the fourth time in her career that Caro has been honored with a weekly conference accolade. She scored a Player of the Week award in 2014 and two Rookie of the Week selections in 2013.
- With a goal and two assists against Brown and Towson, freshman Carlotta von Gierke was picked as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
- Caro has a career-high 13 goals and 28 points to pace the Tigers' offense. After scoring 12 goals in her first two seasons combined, junior Ryan McCarthy has 11 tallies and a career-best 26 points in 2016. Sophomore Sophia Tornetta has 15 points in seven games while von Gierke has a team-high seven assists.
- Princeton has two wins over top-20 teams this season, defeating then No. 12 Albany (Sept. 9) and then No. 10 Delaware (Sept. 11).
- The Tigers are No. 10 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
- Caro leads the Ivy League in goals and is tied for the lead in points. She is tied for sixth in all of Division-I in goals per game (1.0) and is 16th nationally in points per game (2.15).
- McCarthy is third in the conference in points (26) and sits in the top 30 in Division-I in goals (0.79) and points (1.86) per game .
- von Gierke is tied for second in the Ivy League in assists (seven).
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."Â
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Caro, Tornetta and freshman Maddie Bacskai were on the United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- The trio, most recently, was selected to U-21 national team's roster for the Women's Hockey Junior World Cup this November.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- Princeton leads the all-time series, 39-5-2.
- The Tigers have won 22 straight contests vs. Harvard.
- The Crimson last defeated the Tigers during the 1993 season.
- Princeton is 19-2 against Harvard at home and is currently on a 12-game winning streak. Harvard went 2-0-1 against Princeton between 1990-91 seasons.
- In the two teams' last matchup, Maddie Copeland '16 netted a pair of second half scores to lift 20th-ranked Princeton to a 2-1 victory over Harvard at Jordan Field.
- Facing a 1-0 deficit, Copeland put in a pair of goals in the 58th and 67th minutes.
- The Crimson are 8-4 on the season and 4-0 in the Ivy League.
- The Ivy League foe cracked the NFHCA's Coaches' Poll for the first time since Sept. 2005 this week, coming in No. 20.
- Harvard has scored victories over Holy Cross, Pacific, Yale, Maine, Boston University, Penn, Brown, Cornell.
- The team has two wins over top 20 squads, defeating then No. 13 Boston (Sept. 29) and then No. 19 Maine (Sept. 25).
- Marissa Balleza leads the team in goals (10) and points (23).
- Balleza was recently named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week after becoming the program's all-time leader in goals and points last weekend. She scored five points in the team's 5-0 win over Cornell.
