October 23, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton offense erupted in game 2 of the two-game set with Providence, cruising to a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Schneider Arena.
Twelve Tigers received a point with five having multi-point afternoons. Senior Molly Contini scored once and added two assists, while junior Kiersten Falck had three assists. Seniors Kelsey Koelzer and Cassidy Tucker had a goal and an assist each while freshman Julia Edgar picked up two helpers.
The last time Princeton scored seven goals was on Nov. 5, 2010 in a 7-1 win over Yale. You'd have to go back a year earlier than that to find the last time the Tigers scored seven goals on the road, when they earned a 7-2 win at Vermont on Oct. 24, 2009.
Two Princeton penalties in the first four minutes of the game gave Providence the early momentum as they took a 5-0 lead in shots and converted on their first opportunity. With two seconds left to go on the first extra-man advantage, Avery Fransoo mitted down the puck to keep it in the zone and fired it from the high slot. It was redirected by Blair Parent on the doorstep at 3:17.
The Tigers started to find its offense and it carried over into its power-play as the squad got three chances in the first and converted on the first. First-Team All-America Koelzer net her first tally of the season with a drive from the left point with Falck and Contini assisting.
Falck and Contini were at it again as they helped set up Tucker's goal at 1:38 of the second. The Tigers were working for the second goal and it was Tucker who finally got it past nerminder Alanna Serviss.
Brooke Boquist tied it up right before the close of the middle frame on a two-on-one with Madison Sansone. Edgar lied down to prevent the cross-ice pass but Sansone got the deflection and tried again, this time connecting with Boquist for the goal at 18:27.
The third period saw six goals with Princeton scoring three in 1:37. Freshman Carly Bullock net her first goal on the doorstep as she redirected a Sylvie Wallin shot. Sophomore Karlie Lund followed 27 seconds later as she roofed a shot from inside the left circle and senior Morgan Sly padded the lead 1:10 later when she was wide open for a pass from Claire Thompson.
A short-handed tally by Kate Friesen at 14:24 put her team within two as a face off was low in the zone and Friesen sent a shot in from the left point past a surprised Alysia DaSilva in goal.
Contini responded well, finding the twine 43 seconds afterwards with Falck centering.
Senior Audrey Potts collected her first goal of the year with the final strike at 16:09 as she beat Serviss on a breakaway after receiving an outlet pass from sophomore Stephanie Sucharda.
Princeton outshot Providence 39-23. The Tigers were 3 for 8 on the power play and 3 for 4 on the penalty kill.
DaSilva made 20 saves in the win for the Tigers, while Serviss stopped 32 shots for the Friars.
