Cornell Sneaks by Princeton 2-1
November 19, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team outshot Cornell 39-27 including a 19-5 advantage in the second period but a goal by Pippy Gerace would decide the game as the Big Red left Hobey Baker Rink with a 2-1 win.
The Tigers were coming off of a 7-2 win over No. 5 Colgate from yesterday and could not compete the sweep this afternoon.
"We didn't start with same intensity as yesterday," head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "We still worked hard, but Cornell worked harder and seemed like they were on a business trip with a mission to win the Ivy League. In the third period we came alive a little bit and had some incredible chances and their goalie made two sick glove saves - so we had some fight in the third but I wish we had it for 60. We're consistently inconsistent and we need to figure that out."
Grace Graham put Cornell on the board first, at 4:19 of the first period. After winning the puck in a battle off the boards, Kaitlin Doering split her defenders and fired on goal. Alysia DaSilva turned the puck aside and the Big Red would get to the rebound first in right corner. Doering and Valerie Audet played catch behind the goal before Audet fed Graham in the slot for a backhanded attempt found the back of the net.
Freshman Carly Bullock evened the game roughly 10 minutes later on a superb pass by linemate Karli Lund. All-America defender Kelsey Koelzer outhustled her opponent along the right wall and Lund was there to clean up the puck and skate it into the zone. She sent a bouncing puck to the trailer who used her back hand to go back door on Paula Voorheis.
The Big Red were slowly building momentum late in the second period and with 42 seconds left Gerace gave her team the lead headed into the intermission.
Kiersten Falck was trying to carry the puck back into the Cornell zone before she was trapped against the wall by Kristin O'Neill just inside the blue line. Gerace came over to help out and was able to jam the puck free and from the high slot chipped DaSilva for the score.
The Tigers were desperate to tie the game in the third, using an extra attacker, but Voorheis stood tall to help her team earn the win - finishing the game with 38 saves. Cornell improves to 6-2-1 overall (4-2-1 ECAC, 3-0 Ivy).
Both teams were 0 for 3 on the power play.
DaSilva made 25 for the Tigers.
Princeton (5-4-1, 3-4-1 ECAC, 2-2-1 Ivy) visits Boston University for a pair of non-conference games next weekend, Nov. 25 & 26.
