Tigers Fall 4-1 to BU in Game 1
November 26, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
Boston University scored twice in the first two minutes of the game and the Princeton women's hockey team wouldn't be able to recover as it fell 4-1 in Game 1 of a two-game series at Walter Brown Arena.
Maddie Elia scored just 54 seconds into the game before Samantha Sutherland made it a 2-0 game at 1:58.
Princeton's Sylvia Wallin made it a 2-1 game with her second career tally just 39 seconds into the second period with sophomore Karlie Lund and senior Kelsey Koelzer assisting. On a carry-over penalty from the first period the Tigers had a few seconds remaining on their fourth power-play when Kelsey Koelzer lined up on the left point with her shot going off the pad of Victoria Hanson and into the corner where it was picked up by Lund. Lund put the puck in the high slot for defender Wallin and she fired through traffic for the goal with Cassidy Tucker on the open doorstep ready to clean up.
The Tigers had a 20-7 shot differential in the first period thanks in part to the power-play unit that spent eight minutes on the ice.
Freshman Steph Neatby made her first collegiate appearance, entering the game in place of junior Alysia DaSilva after allowing the first two goals. The Canada U22 product, allowed one goal and made 24 saves in the 58:02.
Nina Rodgers delivered a decisive third goal at 18:13 of the third and Mary Parker popped in an empty-net goal with 11.1 seconds remaining as Princeton tried to rally a comeback with an extra attacker.
Hanson earned the first star of the game as she made a career-high 41 saves, as the Tigers had a 42-29 advantage in shots on goal.
Princeton was 1 for 7 on the power play and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill.
Princeton and BU will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., at Walter Brown Arena.
