Eleven months after Maodo Lo scored 37 points for Columbia in Jadwin Gym and was an inch or two away from 40 and a one-point win on a halfcourt buzzer-beater try, Princeton and Columbia picked up right where they left off.
Princeton trailed by as many as 12 points, but the number seemed larger with Columbia meeting every Tiger attempt to break down the door answered with a push right back in the other direction.
Just before the deadbolt was about to lock, not just on the game but perhaps on Princeton's hopes of chasing down the Ivy title, Devin Cannady made one last rush toward the door, and the result was just the sound Princeton wanted to hear.
Swish.
Cannady made two 3-pointers in the final 11 seconds, including one from well beyond the arc with five seconds to go, to send Saturday night's thriller in Manhattan to overtime, where the Tigers overcame a six-point deficit in the extra frame to win, 88-83.
Though Cannady was the hero late, Pete Miller carried the Tigers early. As Columbia got out to leads of three or four possessions, there was Miller, grabbing the offensive rebound and getting the putback to keep Princeton within arm's reach. The junior big man answered Columbia's largest lead of the half, at 22-10 with eight minutes before the break, with a pair of second-chance buckets on the way to a career-high 20 points and 13 boards for his second double-double of his career.
Princeton went on a 7-0 run to close the first half and enter the break down just 31-27 after making just 7 of its first 25 field goal tries.
The second-half momentum started to go Columbia's way as the Lions didn't let Princeton get any closer than four points until the final minute. A floater by Cannady pulled Princeton within 73-70 with 25 seconds to go, and after Columbia answered with a split at the free-throw line, Cannady sank another 3 with 11 seconds left in regulation to make it 74-73 for Columbia. Cannady went on to better his career high by six points, finishing with 23.
The Lions got an easy bucket on their next possession, finding Lo behind the defense to put Columbia ahead by 3, setting up Cannady's long 3-pointer to tie it with five seconds to go. Columbia couldn't convert on its next possession, and the game went to overtime, 76-76.
Again, Princeton needed a comeback. Columbia scored the first seven points of the overtime to get out to an 83-76 lead, but the Tigers closed the game on a 12-0 run to keep their Ivy hopes alive.
Cannady and Steven Cook drew back-to-back and-1 opportunities around a Cook steal to pull Princeton within a point at 83-82, and after a defensive stand at the other end with a minute to go, Cannady put Princeton up 84-83 with a bucket.
The Tigers benefited from a rare Columbia turnover on the Lions' next possession on a night when Columbia had only six giveaways in the entire 45 minutes, and Henry Caruso ended the game by going 4 for 4 at the stripe.
Yale will come to Jadwin Gym Friday with a perfect Ivy record at 8-0 and Princeton a game and a half back at 6-1. The game will tip at 7 p.m. in what will be the first of five home games over Princeton's last seven contests.
