Just as the first one did, the final game of the trip to Italy for the Princeton men's basketball team went to overtime, but this time, the extra frame went the way of the Tigers' Italian opponents.
Myles Stephens drove the lane and dunked with five seconds left in regulation before try for Junior Casale's Niccolo Martinoni rimmed out at the buzzer, but the second-division Italian team never trailed in the OT and won 84-80.
Steven Cook led Princeton with 21 points to become the third player in three games to lead the team in points. Mike LeBlanc had 18 in the team's first game last Friday against Fortitudo Kontatto while Spencer Weisz had 13 Sunday night at ASD Pallacanestro Vicenza. Fortitudo is a second-division club along with Junior Casale, for which T.J. Bray '14 played last year, and Vicenza is in the third division.
Princeton got out to a nine-point first-quarter lead on the strength of a 10-0 run, but Casale closed the frame with 13 straight points in a back-and-forth that went on the rest of the game. The Tigers last led on a Stephens basket to go ahead 66-65 with more than two minutes to go in the fourth.
Henry Caruso (13 points) and Spencer Weisz (10) joined classmate Cook in double figures as the senior trio accounted for all of the team's first 26 points, a span that went more than two minutes into the second quarter.
Obinna Emegano led Casale with 20 points as one of five players in double figures. Brett Blizzard, a UNC Wilmington alum who is one of two Americans on the squad, was one of those with 14 points while Jordan Tolbert, who played at Texas Tech and SMU, chipped in seven.
With the Tigers returning home Wednesday, a day around Lake Como will fill the team's final full day in Italy.
