Tigers Blank Dartmouth 4-0

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/6/17) - When the Princeton and Dartmouth hockey teams met at Hobey Baker Rink tonight it was clear that both teams are heading in opposite directions since the squads first met at Dartmouth back on Nov. 12.
Peppering Big Green senior goalie Robyn Chemego from the outset, the Tigers outshot Dartmouth 44-10 and freshman Carly Bullock scored twice as Princeton won, 4-0, stretching its current unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1). Freshman defender Claire Thompson had three assists while goalie Steph Neatby stopped all 10 shots she faced.
The Tigers (11-6-2, 7-4-1 ECAC Hockey, 3-2-1 Ivy League) lost to Dartmouth, 3-2, in overtime in that early season meeting — part of a stretch which saw Princeton win just twice during a nine-game stretch (2-6-1).
Since a one-goal OT loss at Boston University on Nov. 26, the Tigers have turned things around - recording three shutouts during their current unbeaten run.
"From the get-go we seemed to be clicking and we were enthusiastic to get back into Ivy League play," said Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal.
Indeed. Princeton registered 17 shots to just two for Dartmouth in the opening period and carried much of the play in the Big Green defensive zone.
With Dartmojuth's Sydney Hall in the box for checking, the Tigers needed just 21 seconds to score on their first power-play opportunity. Controlling the offensive zone face-off, the Princeton power-play unit maintained possession and after a nice passing play from Kelsey Koelzer to Thompson to Stephanie Sucharda the Tigers' opened the scoring when Bullock deflected Sucharda's point shot for her 10th goal of the year at 11:24.
Chemango, who had 45 saves in the Big Green's win back in November, was again sharp, stopping 16 shots in the first to keep her team within one goal.
The Tigers struck again with 5:50 left in the second when Kiersten Falck chipped a puck to senior Cassidy Tucker in the right circle and Tucker fired a laser just inside the right post for her eighth goal of the year.
"We've been on a bit of a roll lately and it was good to get back into league play," said Kampersal. "The roles are starting to become more clear and we're starting to be more consistent."
Despite dominating the first two periods the outcome was still in doubt but Princeton, playing one of its best periods of the year, squelched any thoughts of a comeback.
The Tigers scored twice and fired 16 shots at Chemango to just four for the Big Green (2-11-0, 1-7-0 ECAC, 1-3 Ivy) in the final period,
Sophomore Karlie Lund converted from in front of the net off of some nice work by Molly Contini behind the net to make it 3-0 with 13:19 to play. The goal was Lund's team-leading 15th goal of the season and Thompson was credited with the second of her three assists.
Bullock scored the game's final goal and her 11th of the season came with 3:26 to play, as she finished off a two-on-one rush with Lund after a clearing pass from Thompson.
With the win the Tigers move into fourth place in the crowded ECAC race with 15 points, one point behind travel partner Quinnipiac. First-place Clarkson and second-place St. Lawrence are both idle this weekend.
Princeton hosts Harvard at Hobey Baker Rink on tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Crimson enter the contest with a record of 1-9-2 after playing to a 2-2 tie with Quinnipiac this evening. Princeton defeated the Crimson, 2-1 in overtime in Cambridge on freshman defender Julia Edgar's first career goal in the first meeting on Nov. 11.
