Lundy & Paulson Punch Tickets to Oregon on Final Day of Regionals

Sophomore Conor Lundy capped the NCAA East Regional with a qualification to the NCAA Championships in the 5k. He is the third Tiger who will compete for a national title in Eugene, Ore., after senior William Paulson qualified earlier in the day in the 1500. The duo join junior Adam Kelly who qualified in the hammer throw on Thursday.

Lundy took fourth in the second heat of the 5k at 14:11.62 (32.87, 1:12.59, 1:12.86, 1:11.67, 1:10.98, 1:10.24, 1:09.46, 1:09.39, 1:04.70, 1:06.15, 1:06.48, 1:04.81, 59.38). Lundy was in the front pack the entire race and at the 2200-meter mark was in eighth place. Four laps later he had gained two positions and at the 4200-meter mark had made his way into fourth. Lundy, who was third in this event at Heps, is the only student-athlete from the Ivy League to advance in the event. He clocked a PR earlier in the season of 14:07.99. Though he was competed in two NCAA Cross Country Championships, this will be his first time competing at Outdoors.
The final of the 5k will be held on Day 3 of the NCAA Championships, June 8 at 7:25 p.m., (local time).

Freshman Matt Grossman and junior Jeremy Spiezio also competed in the 5k. Grossman posted a 14:41.83 in his first NCAA Regional (33.24, 1:13.81, 1:12.49, 1:11.86, 1:10.89, 1:09.88, 1:10.02, 1:08.98, 1:11.12, 1:11.37, 1:10.97, 1:07.41) to take 37th. Spiezio ran 14:46.62 (31.74, 1:08.93, 1:08.49, 1:08.43, 1:08.65,1:10.60, 1:09.51, 1:08.30, 1:11.17, 1:13.37, 1:15.18, 1:16.57, 1:15.76) to finish 39th overall.

Paulson will make his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships in Oregon as he punched his ticket in the 1500 this afternoon. Paulson posted a time of 3:46.85 (46.46, 1:05.18, 1:01.52, 53.83) to take fourth in heat 2 of the quarterfinals. At the 700 and 1100-meter marks he was in sixth place. He had the fourth fastest final lap to push into fourth place to earn a qualifying finish. Paulson has reached the NCAA Championships now twice, out of the three times he has qualified for the NCAA Regional in the event. The Ivy Heps 1500 champion, Paulson's season best time came in that final race a 3:47.75. He owns a PR of 3:42.23.

The 1500 semifinal will be held on Wednesday, June 6 at 4:46 p.m. (local time).

Senior Garrett O'Toole did not advance as he finished ninth in heat 1 with a season-best time of 3:45.17. The Ivy Heps runner-up in this event, O'Toole clocked splits of 44.23, 1:03.39, 1:01.05 and 56.51. He was in second place at 300 meters and had the fastest second lap time, leading the pack at 700 meters. At the bell he remained in second place but dropped back on the final 400 meters. O'Toole finishes his career at Princeton with a PR of 3:41.85 in the 1500, and qualified for the NCAA Regionals three times in this event.

The 4x100 relay, making its NCAA Regional debut hit a stumbling block in today's first round and did not finish the race. Junior Charlie Volker started things off before sophomore Joey Daniels picked up the second leg. Freshman Austin Carbone made up the stagger on the third leg however the pass to senior Carrington Akosa did not happen in time in the zone permitted. This relay set the Princeton record with a 39.90, the fourth fastest time ever run in the Ivy League.

Sophomore Joey Daniels finished his season in the quarterfinals of the 110-meter hurdles. Daniels who advanced out of the first round with a 13.87 put up a 14.05 this afternoon to finish sixth in heat 3. He had the 14th fastest time, just missing the top 12 that advanced to Eugene. This is the second straight season that the Princeton record holder has qualified for the Regional. His record of 13.80 is the third fastest in Ivy League history.

In the triple jump, senior Lane Russell had a season-best with a jump of 15.65 (51-4.25) to finish just three spots out of qualifying. Russell was in first place after the completion of the second flight, but all 12 spots went to student-athletes in the final two flights. Russell began the competition with a 14.89 (48-10.25) and improved on each of his next two attempts with a 15.38 (50-5.5) and a 15.65. A two-time Regional qualifier in this event, Russell owns a PR of 15.79 (51-9.75) from indoor season while today's 15.65 marks his best effort outdoors. That sits him tied for fifth all-time at Princeton in the triple jump.

Junior Stefan Amokwandoh was in sixth after the completion of the second flight, also falling out with a 15.14 (49-8.25). He hit 14.56 (47-9.15) on his first attempt before fouling on his second. On his final attempt he reached 15.14. Like Russell, this is the second time Amokwandoh has qualified for the NCAA Regional. He owns the fourth-best mark at Princeton in the triple with a PR of 15.71 (51-6.5).
