Sweet Sixteen! Rookies Lead Princeton to 5-2 win at Dartmouth
January 05, 2019 | Women's Ice Hockey
Freshmen Maggie Connors and Sarah Fillier each scored twice and Cassie Reale earned the win in goal as the Class of 2022 guided No. 6 Princeton to a 5-2 win over Dartmouth. The win extends the Tigers unbeaten streak to 16 - remaining the longest unbeaten streak in the nation.
Fillier, the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month finished her weekend as the nation's best scoring freshman with three goals and two assists, while teammate Connors led the nation's freshmen in goals with four to provide Fillier some competition in the race.
Of the 13 points, eight came from the freshman class with Mariah Keopple adding two assists from the blue line.
After more than 20 minutes of scoreless hockey the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in a span of 6:51.
Connors got things started when her hard shot went off the pads of goaltender Christine Honor and right back to Connors where she was able to put away her own rebound at 3:06.
Just two minutes alter, Fillier's speed helped her split her D in a run down the middle and she buried her ninth of the season.
Senior Stephanie Sucharda converted on the team's second power-play opportunity at 9:57, her third tally of the season to make it 3-0.
Dartmouth (3-12-1, 2-7) got on the board with a power-play goal of its own at 13:00 to end the second 3-1 in favor of the Tigers.
Connors expanded the lead at 7:28 of the third when she beat Honor one-on-one after Princeton forced a turnover in the defensive zone.
Katerine Dajia was able to inch the Big Green closer with a goal at 9:23, but Fillier put the game out of reach with an empty-net goal at 18:46.
Bullock nearly added another empty netter but officials ruled it was scored after time had expired.
Reale made 21 saves in her third win for the Tigers. Two of her three wins have come against Dartmouth.
Honor made 51 saves for Dartmouth as Princeton had a 56-23 shot advantage.
Princeton, now 12-2-4 overall and 10-0-2 in the ECAC, will face two ranked teams next weekend on the road, as it takes on No. 4 Cornell and No. 9 Colgate.
