Princeton Falls To Monmouth In Yet Another Overtime Game
October 26, 2021 | Field Hockey
Another Princeton field hockey game. Another overtime. Another frustrating near-miss.
Monmouth's Lieve Meidane redirected a shot into the cage 1:29 into overtime to give the Hawks a 3-2 victory over Princeton on Bedford Field Tuesday afternoon. The loss dropped Princeton, who was ranked 16th in RPI, to 8-7, while Monmouth, ranked 25th in RPI, improved to 10-5.
For the Tigers, it was a quick turnaround from Saturday's heartbreaking shootout loss to Harvard in the Ivy League showdown in Cambridge. It was also the fourth straight overtime game Princeton has played and the seventh of the year in 15 games. Both of those are the most in program history.
Princeton, playing without injured leading scorer Beth Yeager, had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Monmouth tied it in the first minute of the third quarter. The teams then played the rest of regulation without a tiebreaking goal, and off to overtime the game went.
Sammy Popper scored the first goal of the day nine minutes in off a penalty corner, with an assist to Ophelie Bemelmans. After Monmouth tied it, Popper set up Ali McCarthy perfectly to make it 2-1 Tigers four minutes into the second quarter.
Monmouth outshot Princeton 12-6 in the first half, and it was an 11-5 Princeton advantage in the second half. Princeton did not have any good opportunities in the overtime.
The Tigers travel to Brown Saturday.
