Yeager, Okkinga Lead No. 17 Princeton Past No. 16 UConn In OT
October 03, 2021 | Field Hockey
There are saves that go down on the statsheet and saves that don't but nonetheless live up to their name. Isla Okkinga, in her first start in goal for the Princeton field hockey team, made plenty of both.
Then there are the goals that count on the scoreboard and the goals that a team has for down the road. Beth Yeager provided two of the first kind and helped the Tigers achieve a big step in the direction of the second.
The result was a very entertaining 2-1 win for No. 17 Princeton over No. 16 UConn Sunday afternoon on Bedford Field. Yeager scored both Princeton goals, including one seven minutes exactly into overtime, to take care of the Tiger scoring, and Okkinga, in goal for the first time, made five saves and four other stops of UConn chances by coming out of the cage to snuff point-blank opportunities before they happened, the last of which came a minute before Yeager's winner.
Princeton was finally able to do three things that it had so desperately wanted this season. First, the Tigers got back to the .500 mark after falling in its last two chances to do so. Second, the Tigers also took down a Top 20 opponent after having come so close four other times. Third, Princeton won an overtime game after losses in extra time to Louisville and Maryland.
Okkinga was sharp and aggressive in the cage, allowing only an early third-quarter goal to sneak by. Yeager got that back off a penalty corner nine minutes later, with assists to Ali McCarthy and Ophelie Bemelmans. The game stayed 1-1 into the overtime, and the best chance came on a UConn breakaway that Okkinga sprinted after and shut down before it coudl result in a shot.
UConn then had two OT corners of its own, and Okkinga was forced to make a tough save on the second one. Princeton was then able to take the ball the other way, and Yeager drew a penalty after dribbling into the circle. Sammy Popper was the inserter this time, and Yeager rifled home the winner after Ophelie again set it up for another assist, giving her a team-best five for the year.
Yeager, playing her 10th career game, scored her ninth and 10th goals. Princeton, who outshot UConn 22-12, is at Dartmouth this Saturday.
