Top-10 Opponent Ahead for Women's Soccer During Beltway Trip
August 31, 2021 | Women's Soccer
The area around the nation's capital will be the Princeton women's soccer team's Labor Day Weekend destination as the Tigers get set for a pair of games, Thursday at George Mason and Sunday at Georgetown.
Thursday, Sept. 2 at George Mason, 7 p.m. | ESPN+ | Live Stats
Sunday, Sept. 5 at No. 8 Georgetown, | BEDN/FloSports | Live Stats
Princeton opened its season last weekend with a pair of wins, over Loyola (Md.) and Saint Joseph's, and did not allow a goal in the run of play. Five players scored Princeton's five goals on the first weekend, and both senior Grace Barbara and freshman Tyler McCamey spent time between the posts. The wins moved Princeton to 2-0 for the fifth time in six seasons under Sean Driscoll.
George Mason is in the midst of facing three Ivy League opponents in a row. The Patriots opened that stretch with a 2-1 loss at Penn last weekend, and after the Princeton game, Dartmouth will cross the Potomac for a Sunday afternoon matchup. Overall, the Patriots stand 0-4 on the season, but no team has scored more than twice against GMU in any of the four games.
Georgetown jumped into the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches poll this week, landing at No. 8 after heading down to Texas last weekend and defeating the unranked Longhorns 2-0, moving the Hoyas up three spots in the poll. Georgetown (2-0-1) will also face Dartmouth this week, with the Big Green and the Tigers trading opponents on the holiday weekend. Like George Mason, the Hoyas haven't scored more than twice in a game and haven't allowed more than two either.
Though GMU was Princeton's first NCAA tournament opponent, in 1982, the teams haven't met since 2002. This will be Princeton's third trip to GMU's campus, and the Tigers will be looking for their first win after losses in 1987 and 1991. After Princeton's win in the '82 NCAA first round at home, the Patriots won in 1986 in Princeton and in 1988 in Princeton. The Tigers won the most recent meeting, at home in 2002.
While Princeton and GMU haven't met in almost 20 years, Princeton and Georgetown have only been getting together recently. In 2018, Georgetown picked up an overtime goal to win 2-1 in Princeton. While neither keeper returns from that game, nor the two Hoya goal scorers, senior Gabi Juarez had Princeton's goal in that game. In 2019 in Washington, it was another overtime goal that lifted Georgetown, this time to a 4-3 win. Current Tiger Grace Sherman had two goals in the game, and current Hoyas Kelly Ann Livingstone and Devon Lis had a goal each.
The game with Georgetown will be the first of back-to-back games against teams in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25, with No. 16Â Rutgers set to host Princeton on Sept. 9.
