Princeton Completes Weekend Sweep With Big Win Over UConn
October 02, 2022 | Field Hockey
The starting lineups had been introduced. The national anthem had been played. The start of the Princeton-UConn field hockey game was moments away.
And the PA system at Sherman Athletic Complex played … "Eye of the Tiger."
With that warm welcome, the visitors made themselves right at home, as Princeton scored the first three goals of the game and held off some late Huskies drama to earn a big 4-2 win over a team ranked eighth in the RPI.
The victory completed a weekend sweep in Connecticut for the Tigers, who won 6-1 at Yale Friday night. Princeton is now 7-4 overall with two Top 10 RPI wins as it heads into this coming Saturday's home game against Dartmouth.
Princeton got goals from four different players and one in each quarter to take UConn. For the weekend, 11 different Princeton players had either a goal or an assist.
Zoe Shephard started the scoring in the first quarter when she turned the corner on the left side, kept the ball inbounds near the end line and pushed one into the back of the cage. Talia Schenck doubled the lead in the second quarter when she tapped home a pass from Grace Schulze.
Hannah Davey drew a third-quarter penalty stroke after being taken down in the circle, and Sam Davidson made it count to make it a 3-0 game. UConn finally broke through in the fourth quarter, scoring twice in the final six minutes, but Claire Donovan scored into an empty net with 1.2 seconds left to clinch it.
