Tigers Take Second of Two at Dartmouth, 4-1
February 13, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
Goals from Daniella Calabrese, Annie Kuehl, Maggie Connors and Solveig Neunzert over the first two periods, along with 26 saves on 27 shots from Jennifer Olnowich, helped the Princeton women's hockey team to a 4-1 win at Dartmouth on Sunday to cap a three-game swing through New England.
Princeton ends the weekend assured of a place in the ECAC Hockey tournament, with the quarterfinal round on the final weekend of February. Princeton's opponent and host for that weekend are still to be determined through the final weekend of league play, which will bring Brown and Yale to Baker Rink next weekend.
Friday's game against Brown will be senior night, as the program will recognize seniors Sharon Frankel, Shannon Griffin, Rachel McQuigge and Sarah Verbeek, and Sunday's game will be Princeton's annual Black Out Baker event.
Princeton opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, when Mariah Keopple sent a pass along the boards to Calabrese, who got herself a breakaway and put the puck behind Dartmouth netminder Hannah Humphreys to put Princeton up 1-0 just 2:15 into the game. The goal was the first of the sophomore Calabrese's career.
Just more than three minutes later, Frankel and Kuehl worked the puck up the ice, with Frankel sending a centering pass to Kuehl going toward goal, and Kuehl redirected the puck past Humphreys to double the lead. Kuehl made it nine goals on the season, setting a new single-season best for her two years as a Tiger.
A day after adding three goals in the second period following a single goal in the first, Princeton did the reverse, scoring three times in the opening period. Closing in on eight minutes into the game, Connors weaved her way up the ice with the puck, firing as she skated toward the faceoff dot to Humphreys' right and tucking a shot inside the right post for a 3-0 lead and to earn the status as the 14th player in program history to reach 60 career goals. Sophomore Stef Wallace earned her second assist of the day on the play, giving her five helpers on the two-game visit to Dartmouth, and rookie netminder Olnowich earned her first career point, starting the play by leaving the puck for Wallace behind the Tiger net.
Princeton pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second, with sophomore blueliner Neunzert getting her third goal of the season for her most in a campaign as a Tiger. On what became Princeton's second consecutive power-play goal, Dominique Cormier intercepted a Dartmouth attempted clearing pass, and Neunzert fired the loose puck through the slot for the 4-0 lead with less than three minutes to go in the middle period.
Dartmouth's Kenzie Bachelor scored with 11-plus minutes to go in the game to spoil the shutout bid, but Olnowich earned her second win in as many starts as a Tiger, adding Sunday's win to a Jan. 16 victory at Union.
