Four-Goal First Period Ignites Win Over Dartmouth in #Hobey100 Weekend Opener
January 06, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Four goals from four players in a span of less than seven minutes during the first period sparked the Princeton women's hockey team to a 5-2 win over Dartmouth Friday afternoon at Baker Rink in the first game of the celebration of Hobey Baker Rink's 100th anniversary.
Both Princeton hockey teams are home this weekend, which comes just after the 100th anniversary of the first game at the venue on Jan. 5, 1923, a men's game against the St. Nick's Hockey Club for which Hobey Baker 1914 played after he graduated from Princeton.
Princeton's women will host Harvard Saturday at 3 p.m., and a Fan Village will open at 2 p.m. next to Baker Rink. The Stanley Cup will be on hand, as will college hockey's top two honors, the Hobey Baker Award and the Patty Kazmaier Award. Tickets are available here. Saturday's game will be video streamed on ESPN+ in the U.S., with international visitors able to see the game on Stretch, and viewers in Canada will be able to watch the TSN stream. Live stats are available here.
"You can already feel the energy building today (for Saturday's festivities)," Princeton coach Cara Morey said. "We've got to bottle up what we did in the first period and bring that (on Saturday), but I do think that with all of our alums coming back and the energy around the building (on Saturday), they're going to feel it and they're going to feel that this is something special. It's going to feel like a different game."
Princeton outshot the Big Green 75-25 overall and 41-17 on goal. Jennifer Olnowich had the win in goal with 15 saves.
The Tigers opened the scoring with 11-plus minutes to go in the first period when Jane Kuehl found Mia Coene in the slot with a pass from along the end board, and Coene had the finish. A minute later, Maggie Connors started a scoring play by poking the puck away from a Dartmouth skater in Princeton's defensive zone, and after Annie Kuehl picked up the loose puck, Kuehl and Solveig Neunzert found themselves in tandem going toward goal with Kuehl getting the pass from Neunzert for the finish.
With less than nine minutes to go in the first period and the Tigers on a power play, Connors put a shot on goal and Kayla Fillier was there in front of a crowded net to put in the rebound and give Princeton a 3-0 lead. The advantage became 4-0 with five minutes to go in the first period when Issy Wunder blasted a shot from the faceoff dot to Dartmouth goalie Maggie Emerson's left and threaded it through a crowd in front of the crease.
"That was the best period I've ever seen them play," Morey said. "They came out and they were talking about the program and leaving your mark, and then they came out and showed it."
Dartmouth got on the board in the last minute of the second period with a Jenna Donohue goal, and a Currie Putrah goal less than eight minutes into the third made it 4-2, but Princeton put the lead back to three at 5-2 just before the midway point of the third period when Neunzert found Annie Kuehl in the slot for the finish.
"Going out there in those black jerseys, they're beautiful. We're excited and really lucky to have them," Fillier said. "Being able to go out there in the first period and kind of put them in the blender a bit and get the feet going, especially after the New Year's break, it was really good for us."
Eleven Tigers had points on the day with Kuehl's two goals and two assists apiece from Emerson O'Leary, Connors and Neunzert as the multi-point games on a 15-point day for the Tigers. Kuehl's two-goal game was her second as a Tiger, along with one during the junior's freshman season against Ohio State. Coene's goal was the sophomore's first of the season, as was the senior Fillier's, while rookie Wunder's fourth goal of the season tied her for third on the team this season behind Sarah Fillier (nine) and Connors (six).
