Colgate Holds On to Force Game 3 in ECAC Quarterfinal Series
February 25, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Less than 24 hours after stunning No. 3-ranked Colgate in the first game of the ECAC Hockey best-of-three quarterfinal series, the Princeton women's hockey team fell behind early Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y., but the Tigers had their chances to end the series Saturday until the finish.
With Colgate's 4-3 win, the teams will return to the Raiders' home rink Sunday for a decisive third game, starting at 3 p.m. The winner will head to Yale for next weekend's ECAC semifinals, though the pairings will be determined Sunday as each of the other series is headed to a third game, with St. Lawrence defeating host Quinnipiac to even that series and Cornell doing the same at Clarkson.
Colgate took a lead just 91 seconds into the game on an early power-play opportunity with Kaitlyn O'Donohoe getting a goal, but by the end of the period, Princeton was in front. Issy Wunder tied it with a blast in the slot with less than seven minutes to go in the period, and Maggie Connors tied it with a finish off a Sarah Fillier pass with just seven seconds left in the period. With the assist, Fillier scored her 150th career point, becoming the 10th Tiger in program history to reach that number.
The second period saw Colgate tie it as the Raiders scored their fourth power-play goal of the weekend, accounting for all four of the team's goals to that point, on a Kristyna Kaltounkova goal just before the midway point of the period. Less than five minutes later Wunder put Princeton back in front, stealing the puck at Princeton's offensive blue line and outmaneuvering Colgate netminder Hannah Murphy for the finish. The goal gave the rookie Wunder nine on the season, and it was her second two-goal game as a Tiger, along with Harvard's visit to Baker Rink on Jan. 7.
Colgate tied it on an Elyssa Biederman goal with less than six minutes left in the second period, and the eventual game-winning goal came from Danielle Serdachny with less than five minutes to go in the game as the Raiders scored their first two even-strength goals of the series.
Princeton had a late chance to tie it as Fillier was hauled down going toward the net, and the resulting power play, though with just 15 seconds left, gave Princeton a two-player advantage with goalie Taylor Hyland pulled. Colgate weathered the late chance to even the series.
