A - About
The 2024 Princeton field hockey team has 24 players — 15 returnees from last year’s team, seven freshmen, one returnee from the 2022 team (who happened to play in the Summer Olympics this year) and one returnee from the 2022 team who was hurt one minute into Game 2 a year ago (and who happened to be the leading returning goal scorer heading into last season). There are 12 American players and 12 international players (10 from England; one each from Australia and Germany).
B – Beth
Beth Yeager was a first-team All-American and the Ivy League’s Offensive Player of the Year in each of her first two seasons before taking the 2023-24 academic year off from Princeton to compete with the United States national team in Olympic qualifying and then the Olympic Games, where she started every game for the USA. Yeager, the Ivy leader in goals and points, has 87 points (34G, 19A) in 41 career games.
C – Commonalities
Princeton and Cornell have three common opponents: Northwestern (both lost by a goal) and Louisville and Columbia (Princeton won both by a goal; Cornell lost by a goal). Princeton and Syracuse have two common opponents now (Penn State and UNC) and will have a third after Syracuse plays Louisville Friday. Syracuse defeated Penn State 2-1 and lost to UNC 5-0; Princeton lost to Penn State 3-2 and lost to UNC 2-0.
D – Double
Princeton scored two goals in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to No. 2 Northwestern. Prior to that, Northwestern had allowed just one goal in its first nine games combined.
E – Every
Princeton has four players who have started every game the team has played during their careers: sophomores Ella Cashman and Ottilie Sykes and freshmen Anna Faulstich and Clem Houlden. Beth Yeager has started every game she’s played but has missed four career games due to injury.
F – Freshmen
Princeton has started as many as four freshmen in a game this year and has had six play big minutes in every game so far. There have been at least three freshmen in the starting lineup for all four games so far, and there have been at least two freshmen on the field at all times.
G – Go Big Red
Princeton and Cornell meet for the 47th time in a series that dates to 1978. Princeton holds a 37-6-3 edge, including two wins a year ago — 3-2 in a shootout in the regular season and then 1-0 in the Ivy League tournament semifinals. Princeton has won seven straight against Cornell, the last five of which have all been by one goal.
H – Home
Princeton and Cornell have played 17 games between them, only five of which have been home games.
I – Ivy League
Princeton and Harvard are both 2-0 in the Ivy League. Cornell, Columbia, Brown and Yale are all 1-1, while Penn and Dartmouth re both 0-2. The top four teams will meet in the Ivy League tournament at the home of the top seed, with the winner to receive the league’s automatic NCAA tournament bid.
J – Just Three
Princeton has started the same three on defense all season — Clem Houlden, Gracie McGowan and Ottilie Sykes. The last time Princeton had three defenders start every game in a full season was 2016.

K – Korners
Okay, penalty corners are technically spelled with a “C,” but in the statcrew program, the code is a “K.” After not scoring on any of its first 13 penalty corners through four games of the season, Princeton has scored on four of 20 since. Princeton’s opponents have scored six goals on 43 penalty corner attempts.
L – Lydia
Sophomore Lydia Bills scored Princeton’s first goal in the 3-2 loss to Northwestern Sunday. The goal was the first of her career.
M – Minutes
Clem Houlden has played every minute of each of the last four games.
N – National Rankings
Princeton is ranked 14th this week in the NFHCA coaches’ poll. Syracuse is one spot behind, at No. 15.
O – Orange
Princeton leads the all-time series with Syracuse 13-12, though the Orange have won the last two, in the 2022 NCAA tournament and in the 2023 regular season.
P – Princeton Records
Princeton goalie Robyn Thompson is sixth all-time at Princeton in career wins with 31 and seventh all-time at Princeton is career shutouts with 12.
Q – Quarterly
Princeton has scored a goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter in each of its last two games. In all, four of Princeton’s last five goals and five of Princeton’s last seven goals have come in the fourth quarter.
R – Road Games
Princeton’s games this weekend will be its ninth and 10th of the season. Only two of those will have been at home. After this weekend, Princeton has six regular season games to play, of which five will be at home. The only remaining road regular season game will be at Harvard (Oct. 19).
S – Schulze
Grace Schulze scored all three Princeton goals in the 3-2 win over Rutgers, including two goals less than a minute apart in the final five minutes of the game. Schulze had six goals and 12 assists for 24 points in 2022, when she was a second-team All-Ivy League selection, but had not scored a goal in 681 days dating back to her goal against Syracuse in the 2022 NCAA tournament. Schulze was Princeton’s leading returning scorer for 2023, but her season ended 45 seconds into the second game of the year with a broken collarbone that required surgery and caused her to miss the rest of the year.
T – Titles
Princeton field hockey has won 27 Ivy League championships, which is more than the other seven league teams combined. It’s also tied with Harvard women’s squash for the most Ivy League championships won by any women’s team in any sport.
U – University
Princeton has been ranked as the No. 1 academic university in the United States by US News and World Report for the past 14 consecutive years, including in the new rankings that came out for this year.
V – Veterans
Princeton’s senior class features six players: Clare Brennan (F), Aimee Jungfer (M), Gracie McGowan (D), Grace Schulze (F), Robyn Thompson (G), Lily Webb (F). Those six have combined for 286 games played, with 127 starts between them.
W - What It’s Worth
Princeton has outshot its opponents 93-89 for the season. The team with the most shots in the game is 6-2 through Princeton’s first eight games (Princeton outshot Penn State but lost; Princeton was outshot by Rutgers but won).
X - X factor
Beth Yeager has scored four overtime goals in her career, most recently against Miami (Ohio) earlier this season.
Y – Year Ago
Ottilie Sykes and Ella Cashman scored the goals in the regular season against Cornell last year, giving Princeton a 2-0 lead before the Big Red tied it, forcing OT and eventually a shootout. Sykes scored the only goal in the Ivy tournament game.
Z – Zero
Princeton has four shutouts through eight games, a 0.5 average that leads the Ivy League and is sixth in Division I.
