No. 13/14 Women’s Hockey Dominates RPI To Start 2025 Strong
January 03, 2025 | Women's Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y.- Princeton started the new year off with a bang. After taking two shots and killing a power play to start the period against the RPI Engineers, Lucia DiGirolamo intercepted the pass and was off to the races. The freshman forward slapped the shot top shelf to get on the board first and Princeton never looked back on its way to a 7-2 rout of RPI.
Shortly after, the Engineers were back on the power play but that did not deter the Tigers. In almost the exact same sequence as her first goal, Lucia was off again on the breakaway and went bar down for the shorthanded goal for a 2-0 lead.
RPI scored on its third power play of the game on a goal from Andrea Trnkova from Meg Hildner and Morgann Skoda. Rosie Klein and the Tigers immediately responded. Klein pushed the puck towards RPI's Reese Keating, the National Goalie of the Month. The puck tipped into the back of the net to bump the Princeton lead back to two.
Mackenzie Alexander joined in on the first period fun in the closing minutes on a strong shot for the score with Issy Wunder getting the helper.
Wunder pushed the positive momentum into the second period and scored just 15 seconds in for a 5-1 lead. Before the Engineers even had a chance to regroup, Jane Kuehl took off down the ice and slapped the puck across the net for another tally as Princeton added two goals less than two minutes into the period.
Jennifer Olnowich shut RPI out in the second period and ended the night with 20 saves and five fended off power plays for the Tigers before Taylor Hyland took over in the third.
Princeton picked up a power play at the beginning of the third thanks to an interference call on Trnkova and looked to capitalize. The Tigers went into the contest with a league leading 40.4% success rate with the man advantage. Klein looked to the nation's leader in power play goals in Sarah Paul, who launched the pass right by the new RPI goalie, Maelee Ambrass.
The Engineers attempted to claw their way back into the game with a power play goal from Trnkova, her second of the game, but the contest was too far out of reach as Princeton picked up its ninth win in ten games.
The Tigers will head to Schenectady, N.Y. on a six game win streak for a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Union Garnet Chargers and the game is set for 3:00 PM.
