September 20, 2025 | Women's Soccer
They've met four times in the last two years and 45 times since the Tigers' first varsity season 45 years ago, and meeting No. 46 between Princeton and Harvard will take place on Saturday in Cambridge.
at Harvard, Saturday, 1 p.m. | ESPN+ | Int'l Video | Live Stats
The Ivy: There was no splitting of the points over the Ivy League's first weekend with Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth and Brown all winning their openers. The top four teams in the Ivy will make the Ivy League Tournament, and the top seed will host that event Nov. 7 and 9. This week, while Princeton looks to go to 2-0 and Harvard looks to avoid 0-2, Dartmouth will look to go to 2-0 at Penn while the Quakers aim to avoid 0-2, with both games on Saturday at 1 p.m. In a pair of 6 p.m. starts on Saturday, a pair of 2-0 teams go head-to-head with Brown at Columbia, while Cornell and Yale will meet at that time as each looks for its first league win of the season.
On Princeton: The Tigers (2-3-3) won their Ivy League opener last Friday night at Penn with Isabella Garces scoring an 11th-minute goal as Princeton outshot the Quakers 16-3 overall and 7-2 on goal with Cecilia Cerone getting the shutout between the posts. The goal was Garces's first goal of the season in her first start of the season in just her second appearance of the season after missing the season's first six games due to injury. It made Garces the team's seventh goal scorer of the season, with Zoe Markesini, who has been out due to injury since the Aug. 31 game against Syracuse, leading the team with two goals. Alexandra Barry, Nina Cantor, Ally Murphy, Pia Beaulieu and Sarah Houston have scored a goal apiece, and while Cerone (1-1-2, 1.53 GAA, .640 sv%) has played 528 minutes in goal, Sydney Romano (1-2-1, 1.41 GAA, .769 sv%) has played 191 minutes.Â
On Harvard: The Crimson (2-4-2) defeated Boston University and New Hampshire to take a two-game winning run into last Saturday's visit from Dartmouth, but the Big Green used a 75th-minute goal to take a 1-0 win. After scoring four goals over the first five games, Harvard scored five to get the wins over BU and UNH before getting shut out by Dartmouth. Seven Crimson have combined to score nine goals this season, with Jasmine Leshnick and Lauren Muniz each scoring two goals. Rhiannon Stewart has played all 720 minutes in goal, holding a 1.43 GAA and a .722 save percentage entering the visit from the Tigers. Harvard senior Vanessa Frelih and Princeton junior Zoe Markesini share a high school alma mater, with both alums of Bill Crothers Secondary School in Markham, Ont.
The series: Harvard leads 28-15-2 all-time, but since Sean Driscoll took over in 2015, the Tigers lead the series with Harvard 6-4-1 and bring a two-game series win streak into Saturday's game. The teams have met twice in each of the last two seasons, including two regular-season meetings and in each of the first two Ivy League Tournaments in the semifinal round. One active Harvard player has scored a goal against Princeton, with current junior Ólöf Kristinsdóttir getting a goal in the Crimson's 4-2 win in the 2023 ILT semi at Brown. Princeton junior Kayla Wong scored a goal in each of last season's two games against Harvard, both 3-1 Tiger wins and both in Princeton, with the second of those in the ILT semi. The lone active keeper on either side to play against the other is Harvard senior Rhiannon Stewart, who had nine saves in the regular-season loss and five in the ILT semi loss. Princeton is unbeaten in the last two games in Cambridge, winning 1-0 in 2021 and tying 1-1 in 2023, while the Crimson's last home win over Princeton came in 2019, 2-1.
Outshoot 'em: In 172 games under Sean Driscoll, Princeton has outshot its opponent in overall shots 131 times and has equaled its opponent in total shots three times, getting outshot 38 times, or in just more than once every five games (22.1 percent).Â
Preseason polls: Princeton was picked first and Harvard third in the Ivy preseason poll. The Tigers had eight athletic All-Ivy honorees last year but took a huge hit with losses to graduation and the pros. Pietra Tordin, who chose to forgo her senior season to turn pro with the NWSL's Portland Thorns, was the Ivy Offensive Player of the Year in 2024, and Lily Bryant, Heather MacNab and Tyler McCamey all graduated and went on to the pro ranks, with Bryant at FC Porto in Portugal, MacNab with the NWSL's North Carolina Courage, and McCamey with the NWSL's KC Current. On the second team, Ryann Brown is using a graduate season at North Carolina and Kate Toomey graduated, leaving Zoe Markesini and Drew Coomans as the only returning 2024 All-Ivy honorees for the Tigers. Markesini has missed time since leaving the Aug. 31 game against Syracuse due to injury. For the Crimson, of the team's five athletic All-Ivy honorees last season, the three first-teamers graduated (Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir, Josefine Hasbo, Jade Rose), with second-team goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart and honorable mention forward Audrey Francois back.Â
Tigers in the NWSL: Princeton has six players currently on NWSL rosters. Pietra Tordin, who turned pro following her junior season last school year, has already twice been named the NWSL Rookie of the Month, doing so in June and adding the second in August. Through the weekend, Tordin had played in 20 games for the Portland Thorns, starting the last three and seven of the last 12, and had scored four goals. Tyler Lussi '17 started the North Carolina Courage's last 10 games through last weekend, scoring both of her season's goals in that span. Aria Nagai '24 played in five straight games to end August for the Utah Royals and started four of those, and Madison Curry '24 started her 13th straight game and 18th on the season last weekend for the Seattle Reign against the KC Current. Heather MacNab '25 made her pro debut for the North Carolina Courage on Sept. 13 against Angel City FC, and Tyler McCamey '25 was signed to the KC Current on Sept. 5. Along with the NWSL six, Lily Bryant '25 is playing in Portugal for FC Porto, making her pro debut on Sept. 13.
The staff: Head coach Sean Driscoll is in his 11th year with Princeton and 10th competitive season (team did not compete in 2020), and has the most Ivy League Coach/Coaching Staff of the Year honors since the award began in 2014, with four (2015, 2017, 2018, 2024). He's Princeton's second-winningest coach, with 109 wins, and with his 40 wins at Manhattan (2005-09) added in, he's just one win from his 150th career victory. He's Princeton's second-winningest coach in program history, with predecessor Julie Shackford having won 203 games from 1995-2014. Associate Head Coach Mike Poller has been with Driscoll for the entire Tiger tenure, and keepers coach Chris Duggan is in his fourth season with the program. Under Driscoll, Princeton has won four Ivy League titles (2015, 2017, 2018, 2024) and has made six NCAA tournaments (2015, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023, 2024), making the second round in 2015, 2017, 2021 and 2023 and the quarterfinals in 2017.Â

at Harvard, Saturday, 1 p.m.
