CAMDEN, N.J. - The top-ranked Princeton heavyweight crew routed Penn and Columbia Saturday to win the oldest trophy in collegiate racing, the Childs Cup. The win came on the Cooper River, where the Tigers hope to win another prize down the road, the IRA national championship.
Princeton improved to 4-0 on the season and defended the Childs Cup by taking the first varsity race in 6:07.7, more than 14 seconds faster than Columbia's time of 6:21.9. The Tigers also claimed the second varsity race in 6:26.4, although Penn did claim a win in the top novice race.
The upcoming weekend will be a critical one for Princeton, as it welcomes both No. 3 Harvard and MIT to Lake Carnegie. The Crimson is both the defending Eastern Sprint and IRA national champion, but it is currently behind Princeton in the 2005 national poll.
