PRINCETON, N.J. (10/19/16) - The Princeton women's hockey team opens the 2016-17 season this weekend when it travels to Providence. Game times are Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton is coming off one of its most successful seasons in program history. After winning the Ivy League championship, the Tigers finished third in the ECAC and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Princeton closed out the season with a 6-2 loss to the eventual national champion Minnesota. The Tigers return 87 percent of its scoring from last year including its top four scorers. The Ivy League and ECAC Rookie of the Year Karlie Lund finished the season with 39 points on 17 goals and 22 assists. Senior defender Kelsey Koelzer was second in the nation last year in points for a defender with 33 in 33 games. She earned first-team All-America honors, was a Patty Kazmaier top-10 candidate and was selected to the USA Under-22 Team for the USA/Canada series this summer. Seniors Molly Contini and Morgan Sly had 25 and 22 points, respectively last season. The defense is bolstered by sophomore Stephanie Sucharda, who was an ECAC All-Rookie selection and a member of the Canadian U-22 team this summer. Joining her on the Canadian squad is freshman netminder Steph Neatby. With the graduation of all-star Kimberly Newell in goal, the Tigers will look to both Neatby and junior Alysia DaSilva to protect the goal. DaSilva has seen limited action collegiately but her numbers are quite impressive. In 200 minutes she has a 0.60 goals against average and a .972 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS
Providence is off to a 3-3 start since beginning the season on Sept. 25. The squad opened with three straight losses, to Boston University and a pair at home to Robert Morris. The Friars have since won three straight with a pair of shutout victories over RIT and a 4-2 win over Union on Tuesday night. Providence's power play is 6 for 40 (15%) and its penalty kill is 43 of 50 (86%).
Senior Cassidy Carels has nine points in six games thus far in the early season on five goals and four assists. Sophomore Christina Putigna and two freshmen defenders, Rachel Rockewell and Whitney Dove all have five points apiece. Dove leads the team in assists with all five of her points coming by way of assist. Two netminders have seen action this season. Sophomore Madison Myers has played in five games and has a 2-3 record with a 2.01 GAA and a .922 save percentage. Senior Alanna Serviss started in the last game, against Union, and recorded a 2.01 GAA and a .900 save percentage.
THE PRINCETON/PROVIDENCE SERIES
Providence holds a deadly 44-8-4 edge in the all-time series. The Friars at one time were a member of the ECAC, setting up two annual matchups between 1979-80 and the 2000-01 season. However, the teams have not faced each other in six years. The last game was a 4-0 Friars win in Rhode Island in October 2010, with Princeton's last win in 2004, a 4-1 game in Providence.
